ALBUM REVIEW: Sentiment Dissolve – The Orwellian Dream

For quite some time now, Toronto has been the undisputed hotbed of Technical Death Metal, and what’s more, the sounds emanating from up in Ontario only seem to get better and better.Continue reading

CONCERT REVIEW: Dethklock – Babymetal – DragonForce Live at the Masonic Auditorium

I returned to the Masonic Auditorium for the second time in a few months to see an awesome metal show! I have mostly seen punk shows at this venue, which is odd, because it is perfectly suited for extravaganzas like the Mutilation on a Spring Night tour from Dethklock. Typically the tour features the headline band on their second go around the US along with DragonForce and Necrogoblikon but tonight we were in for a special exclusive treat. For two nights only and predating their appearance at Sick New World Festival, Baby Metal was going to grace us with a redux of the BabyKlock tour from 2023. So tonight we got full sets from Babymetal, DethKlock, and DragonForce. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Daath – The Deceivers

After 13 years, Dååth has returned with their new album, The Deceivers (Metal Blade records).

The band, helmed by sole founding member Eyal Levi, returns to a different musical landscape. Metal has perhaps the most loyal fan base of any genre of music, yet the climate is much different than when the band released their self-titled album in 2010. Death Metal is now more regularly integrated with Black Metal and Metalcore. Record companies often market Pop acts as Metal, depending on the thought police of the internet to defend them with cries of gatekeeping, when voices rise against this.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Atræ Bilis – Aumicide

There are two dead giveaways that Atræ Bilis have something very, very weird in their back pocket.

Released by the continuously boundary-blurring 20 Buck Spin, Aumicide’s cover artwork is something that, let’s just say, probably shouldn’t be focused on too long whilst at work or in a public setting. Continue reading

CONCERT REVIEW: Decapitated – Septicflesh – Kataklysm – Allegaeon Live at The Observatory

It was my second time coming to The Observatory at Santa Ana, as it’s become a place I enjoy seeing shows, with floor area having inclined sections for fans from afar to see, instead of being blocked from the ground level. Also, the sound of bands and vocals is always sounds great. Walking into venue, there’s a long line for merch, which is expected, as fans talked about whom they came to see, or have seen.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Engulfed – Unearthly Litanies of Despair

Death metal has always been a very hit-or-miss subgenre for me but most of it I do appreciate it. In good news, I have been listening to the new Engulfed album, Unearthly Litanies of Despair (Me Saco Un Ojo/Dark Descent Records), and it is certainly a hit and not a miss. Just shy of forty minutes, the four-piece from Turkey slams and shreds their way through your cranium. Just the right mixture of grimy OSDM and technical fretwork gives this album some replayability.Continue reading

According to a report from our friends at Lambgoat.com, The Summer Slaughter Tour will return after a four-year absence in 2024! The band was on The Summer Slaughter tour in 2019. First taking place in 2007 in the USA and expanding to Canada, and Europe, the tour was responsible for the growth of popularity, especially in the USA of such bands as Necrophagist, The Black Dahlia Murder, Decapitated, Job For A Cowboy, Suicide Silence, Between The Buried and Me, Animals As Leaders, Cattle Decapitation, The Faceless, Periphery, and more. CONCERT REVIEW: Vader – Origin – Inhuuman Condition Live at DNA Lounge

Rolling into DNA Lounge on a Friday night I was disappointed to learn that the doors opened earlier than expected and the first band had already played by the time I walked in. Generally speaking, I always have a good time at DNA Lounge, but this was pretty disappointing, as I like to try to catch all the bands if I can. Despite my old-man at the club status, I do believe in supporting every band on a bill. The number one thing you can do as a club is just be consistent about the basics. Moving on.Continue reading
