ALBUM REVIEW: The Night Flight Orchestra – Give Us The Moon

Retro-flavoured Swedes The Night Flight Orchestra (ft. Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Mean Streak members) are still at it with their seventh album Give Us The Moon (Napalm Records). With an insanely catchy AOR style, with an unabashedly high level of seventies and eighties-style cheese front and centre. Half the tracks here sound like they belong in some long-forgotten, coming-of-age film from 1985.  Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Painted Shield – Painted Shield 3

Painted Shield are notable for featuring Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam/Mother Love Bone/Green River) on guitar and a bunch of friends. Painted Shield’s origins can be traced to 2014 when it was suggested by Daniel Field a mutual friend of Mason Jennings and Gossard that the two work together. They put out a 7” single “Knife Fight”/Caught in a Mess” and then…nothing, until the pandemic hit in 2020.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Fu Manchu – The Return of Tomorrow

Fu Manchu formed in 1985 as Hardcore-Punk outfit Virulence whose sole release  1988’s If This Isn’t A Dream… has been reissued by Southern Lord. After this came a name and musical style change reminiscent of Corrosion of Conformity who undertook a similar evolution themselves. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Barry Adamson – Cut To Black

Eight years on from his last solo record, Cut To Black (Barry Adamson Inc) sees Barry Adamson (former Magazine bassist and Bad Seed) bring us back into his cinematic universe. While soul and murder are still very much on the menu, his latest vision seems a little less murky.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Bob Vylan – Humble As The Sun

It’s been a wild few years for the Grime Punk hybrid duo, Bob Vylan, managing to pull out two of the most hard-hitting albums 2 years on the trot in the form of We Live Here and Bob Vylan Presents The Price Of Life. Displaying a range of venom and blunt wordplay that’s not been seen in the UK scene in years. The two-piece seem to not have faltered either, less than two years since the release of The Price of Life and the band are back at it again with the fourth album in their discography Humble As The Sun (Ghost Theatre Records) “This album is for the underdogs, the ones who come out swinging and those who refuse to bed defeated in the name of injustice.” stated Bobby Vylan. Clearly, from this mindset behind the new album, not a lot has changed since the previous release. How will Humble As The Sun stack up against such a high-caliber discography attained by the duo?Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Outlanders – Outlanders

When an album features Al Di Meola, Trevor Rabin, Vernon Reid, Joe Satriani, and Marty Friedman you know it’s going to be a corker. To make this reviewer squeeze with joy is that Outlanders is actually Tarja Turunen. Tarja is accompanied by Torsten Stenzel.

ALBUM REVIEW: Adanowsky – The Fool

The multicultural and multi-talented Adanowsky has turned his hands to many things – acting, directing, producing, and making music. Written during the pandemic and taking inspiration from tarot cards, is his latest album The Fool (Universal Music Mexico). This is the French-Chilean-Mexican polymath’s tenth album and it is a down-to-earth one; a soft and melodious melting pot of pop, indie, folk, funk, and his Latin American roots.
