When an album features Al Di Meola, Trevor Rabin, Vernon Reid, Joe Satriani, and Marty Friedman you know it’s going to be a corker. To make this reviewer squeeze with joy is that Outlanders is actually Tarja Turunen. Tarja is accompanied by Torsten Stenzel.
Over the last few years, the likes of cybergrind and mathcore have reared their ugly heads into the musical zeitgeist, for better or worse, introducing to the world new visions when it comes to how to write and perform music. Enter Codefendants, a newly formed trio consisting of Fat Mike, Sam King, and Ceschi Ramos. The group’s debut album, This Is Crime Wave (Fat Wreck Chords, Bottles To The Ground), is their titular foray into a new world that combines hip hop, new wave, and an underlying dose of punk rock.
Dälek (pronounced ‘Die-a-leck’) returns with a new album Precipice on Mike Patton’s Ipecac Records. In what is becoming a common refrain of recent times, the album originally planned for 2019 has been completely overhauled because of the pandemic, and the chaotic times we currently find ourselves in. The duo of MC Dälek and DJ Mike Manteca felt that the originally planned album wasn’t strong, angry or heavy enough for the times we have endured. The added strength, anger and heaviness are indeed defining features on Precipice.
Remixes and collaborations, and the concept that the growth and life and mutations and splices and impositions to a song don’t stop once it has been committed to a released format, have become so ingrained and integral to HEALTH that their reworkings of songs are as patiently awaited as the origin pieces.Continue reading
Ohhhh, we’re back baby!!
2021 brought about the release of the new ¡MAYDAY! record Minute To Midnight (Strange Music) and with that came the building anticipation of when the Miami natives would make a trek around the country in support of the album. Given the current state of the world, it was obvious when the album came out that we would be waiting for a bit before any official announcement came out. Well… we’re here. Fresh off of their huge set at last weekend’s Riot Fest 2021, rising genre blenders Blackstarkids have dropped a new single, “All Cops Are Bastards.” The track comes from their upcoming debut album Puppies Forever October 15, 2021 via Dirty Hit Records. Whether you know him from his decade-long rap career, role as Felix in Birdbox, spot-on portrayal of Tommy Lee in The Dirt, comedian Pete Davidson’s BFF, or Megan Fox’s new beau, Machine Gun Kelly, born Colson Baker, has left footprints across the entertainment industry. Hot off a summer full of home-recorded covers and his first MTV Video Music Award, MGK takes another step in a new direction with his fifth studio album, Tickets to My Downfall (Bad Boy/Interscope), wearing his heart on his sleeve for 13 tracks (and 2 interludes) of pop-punk magic. Most fittingly, the new release was executively produced by Blink 182’s Travis Barker, who Baker first collaborated with last summer on “I Think I’m Okay,” along with Brit bud Yungblud. It’s no surprise the album sounds as if it could have been born during the early-2000’s pop-punk heyday. Though TTMD is a change of pace from MGK’s typical style, it does not fully abandon his roots, highlighting a multitude of hip-hop guests and beats, party songs, and pop anthems. In fact, he has consistently cited various rock acts as influences, so it was only a matter of time until he fully submerged himself in the genre.
We caught up recently with Hyro The Hero from his home, on lockdown, keeping safe from the pandemic. Sadly, his spring tour plans opening for Asking Alexandria have been canceled. In the meantime, Hyro is keeping that PMA (positive mental attitude) and keeping his spirits up during trying time by staying busy, working on music, catching up on his gaming, and trying to eat right. He is also checking out all kinds of other musicians and rappers plying their game on Soundcloud and other mediums who are respect-worthy. He’s got a good message for fans too, as Hyro has new music coming soon, the follow up to his acclaimed album Flagged Channel, via his label Better Noise, that he is really excited about, and we are too!
