ALBUM REVIEW: Respire – Hiraeth
In 2020, Canadian Post / Avantgarde Black Metal collective Respire, released their memorable third album Black Line. Hiraeth now follows, four years in the making and diving deeper into the use of experimentation, with grand orchestral arrangements creating a sound that owes as much inspiration to the likes of their fellow countrymen Godspeed You! Black Emperor, as it does classic Black Metal bands such as, well Emperor.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Excel – Seeking Refuge
Ask any metalhead of a certain age and they’ll tell you the nineties have a lot to answer for. A sudden and seismic change in trends saw the death of Thrash, Glam, and other associated sub-genres, and the unprecedented rise of the Grunge and Alternative scenes. What was popular one minute was outdated the next, and while many bands simply weren’t able to survive, others tried embracing the change.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: 200 Stab Wounds – Manual Manic Procedures
Despite signing with a big-name label, it’s extremely refreshing to find out that hardcore-influenced death metallers 200 Stab Wounds have retained everything that makes their sound great: pounding, catchy riffs; a rancid atmosphere; and thrashy guitar fills when necessary.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Apes – Penitence
At this point, anything Extreme Metal that comes from Canada is sure to be a punishing, gruesome affair. It’s as automatic a thing as a Canuck apologizing for merely existing. Continue reading
EP REVIEW: DVRK – Infinite Reminiscence – Season Of Mist
In case you didn’t get the memo, I would like to remind you that DVRK is “a powerhouse fusion of Deathcore, Nu Metal, and Bass music elements.” How do I know this? Well, the press release that was sent to me along with debut EP Infinite Reminiscence (Season of Mist) says so. That, and I listened to the EP and was successfully able to arrive at that conclusion.
