Psycroptic – Aversions Crown – Within Destruction: Live at The Dome, London
Tonight is a busy day for Metal in the Capital, with the dreaded evening of multiple gig clashes, within a few stops of the Northern Line alone. One stop down from tonight’s proceedings in Tufnell Park sees the Cerberus-like bill of Behemoth, At The Gates and Wolves In The Throne Room, whilst Camden Town sees Toundra for those seeking something more mellow, and Obscura for some who, well, aren’t. This goes someway to explaining why The Dome looks tonight to be, at best, around half capacity for much of the night. Not that this seems to dampen anyone’s mood, as all night the crowd are on fine form, showing the bands plenty of love and movement as well as respect to one another. Continue reading
Morild – Så kom mørket…
Morild’s Så kom mørket og tog mig på ordet En sort sky af minder I afgørende stunder Frosset fast i mit indre Jeg håber det forsvinder med lyset At dø eller blive fri (Indisciplinarian), a single passage broken up into six parts to mark the album’s different movements, and translating to “Thus came the darkness and took me by my word A dark cloud of memories In crucial moments Frozen inside of me I hope it disappears with the light To die or become free”) is a strange and surprisingly bold statement for a first album.Continue reading

Ready to kick off another leg of their world tour this week, Behemoth has shared a brand new music video for their track ‘Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica’, directed by Grupa 13. The song comes from their acclaimed 2018 album I Loved You At Your Darkest (Metal Blade). Watch the clip below. Behemoth begins new tour dates tomorrow night with direct support once again from At the Gates and Wolves in the Throne Room.
Behemoth – At The Gates – Wolves In The Throne Room Live At The Fillmore
On the eve of Halloween, I flew into Philly for this massive show. Why? Why not!? A near sold-out Fillmore hosted Behemoth’s the Ecclesia Diabolica America tour 2018. Also on the bill were Swedish legends, At The Gates and the U.S.’s own Wolves At The Throne Room. This was a regular United Nations of metal type of night. Wolves at the Throne Room brought their atmospheric black metal. With keyboards and burning sage and playing just three songs only, they entranced the Philly fans. Continue reading

Century Media Records and USBM band Wolves And The Throne Room have announced a deal to release WITTR albums outside of the USA. The deal extends to the Artemis Records imprint as well. Vouna – Vouna
Even for lovers of the Doom genre such as myself, it’s never a bad thing when a new variant on the strain comes along. Step forward Vouna, a Washington state-based project, whose synth-heavy take on the Funeral sound adds lush, frosted textures to a bleak atmosphere.Continue reading

URSA – Abyss Between The Stars
On the face of it, Abyss Between The Stars (Blood Music) appears like another run-of-the-mill Stoner/Doom record. From its artwork to its song titles, everything about the album appears to be layered in a thick, hazy doom-weed aesthetic which I’ve never been the biggest fan of. Sleep aside; I prefer my Doom to be rooted in abject misery and despair rather than fantasy, ideally horrid and cavernous like Primitive Man or utterly heartbreaking like Warning. However, on listening to URSA’s debut instead of a clichéd trudge through the mire, I was treated to an earnest, epic, and genuinely fun Heavy Metal trip.Continue reading
Dödsrit – Spirit Crusher
I’m looking at Spirit Crusher (Prosthetic) the latest release from Sweden’s Dödsrit and I’m getting a feeling. Not super familiar with the band but judging by the font and the presence of umlauts we know extreme music is on the way, particularly of the Black Metal persuasion. And these song lengths certainly suggest experimentation and a non-commercial nature. Dödsrit is a one-man project isn’t it?
Those one man acts always have the most to say.Continue reading
