Naisian – Rejoinder EP

Adding in atmosphere to almost any subgenre of metal and you are left with, usually, a solid album. Take sludge metal and add atmosphere to it and you get Naisian. Their latest self-released EP release, Rejoinder, absolutely shreds and left me needing more. Three tracks are all there is on this quick EP, but that is the nature of the beast; beast being the perfect term here. MSRY – Safety First

MSRY is the band that felt like the hardcore classification simply wasn’t enough, so they branded themselves as Miserable Hardcore. I first misread that as “melodic hardcore” but melody is in short supply on their self-released Safety First EP. Misery, however, is available in spades and that’s without mentioning the surplus of rage. And how does a power trio sans bassist work up such ugly emotions? The use of cultural elements in heavy music is, by now, a pretty familiar concept with a plethora of bands, ethnicities, and nations bringing such into their sound, whether conceptually or through unique instrumentation, techniques or structures. Very few bands do so quite so vividly and entirely as Greek progressive metallers Raw In Sect have done, however. If 2016’s Mona left you with an itch you can’t seem to scratch, Departures is the remedy you seek. However, that payoff comes with a price: it’s just one new song. Morag Tong – Last Knell Of Om

Fans of The Elder Scrolls will have some idea where Morag Tong are coming from. The Sludgy, spacey promise shown on the London quartet’s 2016 demo has been enhanced on debut album Last Knell Of Om (self-released), with an added depth and maturity emboldening a sound which is in turns throbbing and melancholic, yet full of trippy Psychedelia. Instrumental opener ‘Transmission’ is bossed by an indolent, morose bassline and swirling oscillations, while lead guitars fizz and howl melodiously over the body.
