Death Metal is in rude health. It is a status that has been brewing and broiling over the last ten years, with pushes and spurts in pocketed sub-sub genres, until now the whole scene, and its multitude of variants and mutations and off-shoots, feels like it is not just doing alright, but burgeoning with a lush virility unseen since it’s fomentation some thirty years ago.

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Damnation Festival 2019: Live at Leeds University
When Axl Rose waxed romantically about cold November rain in back in 1992, he clearly wasn’t singing about Leeds on a Saturday morning. A cold, depressing day darkened by oppressive black clouds showering their misery relentlessly from above, there is nothing romantic about Leeds city centre. However, above the sound of rain pelting against umbrella canopies, and cars splashing through ankle-high lakes of dirty water, there is hope. Somewhere out there is Damnation Festival.Continue reading

Invading one of pop cultures most sacred of cows, on the legendary game show Jeopardy last night (11/12/2019), Morbid Angel and Obituary were answers to the question “Morbid Angel and Obituary are popular bands in this genre”. Former Morbid Angel Guitarist Richard Brunelle Died, Age 55
Sad news has come down as former Morbid Angel guitarist Richard Brunelle, early crucial member of the legendary death metal band, has died. He was 55. Brunelle Brunelle was in the band from 1985 until 1992 and he featured on the band’s first two albums, 1989’s Altars of Madness and 1991’s Blessed Are The Sick. He returned to the group a couple of times — most notably in 1994 and 1998 to be part of the touring lineup, but would never record with the band again. The news of Richard’s death was broken by his sister-in-law Megan Box-Brunnele. She wrote on Facebook: “This is Richie’s sister-in-law. This devastating post is at the request of my husband and his mother. It is with deep regret and sorrow that we inform Richie’s friends and fans that he passed away [on Monday]. Please feel free to visit the link to share memories and condolences. Rest in peace, Richie. You were so loved and will be forever missed.” Former Morbid Angel drummer Pete Sandoval mourned Richard’s death on Instagram. He wrote: “This is really sad! So many great memories we shared together that I’ll never forget, hope and wish you are in a better place. My condolences to his family.
“I just received an email of his family letting me know about this sad new, please, a little respect guys, don’t ask me the cause of death or something like that, does it matter? he just passed away and that’s sad. Thanks”
We send our condolences out to Richard’s family, friends and fans at this time. Continue reading
ALBUM REVIEW: Opeth – In Cauda Venenum
If you still haven’t reconciled the fact that Opeth moved away from death metal years ago – that these days they owe more to the likes of Camel and Gentle Giant than to Morbid Angel – then you might as well stop reading now. Uncross your fingers and stay your optimism for an unlikely return to roaring brutality because the Opeth prog train just keeps on rolling and shows no signs of slowing down. However, for those of you happy with the Swedish progsters’ change of direction almost a decade ago, climb back on board, take a window seat and relax. Continue reading
