CONCERT REVIEW: Carpenter Brut – Sierra Live at Brooklyn Steel

Deep in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn with a nice long walk from the train, I’ve finally made it to Brooklyn Steel for a night of French musical goodness. Carpenter Brut can be considered both the name of the keyboardist/mastermind who perfers to be anonymous and also the name of the group itself. Take your pick. Starting the two-band bill night was Sierra who is making her American debut on this tour. Her EDM and Darkwave tones set the vibe perfectly for this moody dance night. She also was the sole vocalist performing live at this show. Armed with her DJ rig, drum pads, and hypnotic beats; Sierra is someone I’d like to see again.

ALBUM REVIEW: Oceans of Slumber – Starlight and Ash

Patience is a virtue. And, no, this isn’t some flippant or patronising reference to Oceans of Slumber “finally fulfilling the potential shown on their first album”, because they fulfilled that already from the off and especially on their third / self-titled release a couple of years ago. I mention it because the benefits and, yes, virtues of Starlight and Ash (Century Media) may not be immediately apparent. Continue reading

CONCERT REVIEW: Ann Wilson Live at Sony Hall

In a time where people tend to throw around the word “legend”, I had the great fortune to experience an incredibly intimate evening with a true legend at Sony Hall last week. Ann Wilson, the undeniable and unmistakable voice of Heart, delivered the goods on the New York City stop of her tour. She’s supporting her new release Fierce Bliss. The album, like so many others to come out this year, was a product of the abundance of time off courtesy of Covid. Ann used her time very wisely and enlisted the help of a wide variety of heavy hitters including Vince Gill, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” Was Covered in HBO’s Westworld Season Four

Metallica’s Heavy Metal hit “Enter Sandman” got the Westworld treatment tonight as an orchestral instrumental cover of the track was heard in the latest episode. In the HBO shows’s season four, episode three Annees Folles, you can hear a cover by award-winning composer Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) as he covered the tune. Also, heard in the episode a few seconds of a  Ragtime piano cover of “Enter Sandman,” a Ragtime cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,”  and Blondie’s Pop Rock hit “Call Me!” Westworld’s use of the music has been amazing throughout the series and featured past covers of Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails among others.  Continue reading
