Two-time Grammy-nominated artist Poppy and Japanese horror manga legend Junji Ito have joined forces on In Old Records, a fully produced vinyl audio drama adaptation of Ito’s 1997 horror short story, now live on Kickstarter via Zero Zero Enterprises.
The story follows a long-lost record of singer Paula Bell’s final song. A terrible curse befalls anyone who listens to it. Pressing that story onto actual vinyl that people can spin at home is either a stroke of genius or a deeply questionable life choice. That tension is entirely the point.
Ryan Cady adapted the script. He wrote Haunt You to the End for Image Comics and has credits across Marvel and DC. He also co-wrote the graphic novels Poppy: Genesis 1 and Poppy’s Inferno with Poppy directly, making him a natural fit here. Poppy delivers the English narration, with singer and voice actress Shoko Nakagawa handling the Japanese version. Acky Bright designed the jacket, which carries Junji Ito’s actual bloody handprint. Ito remains directly involved throughout the project.
