Glassing – Spotted Horse
A thunderous crack of guitars explode outwards above a deluge of dextrous percussion. It all swirls around the listener before reaching a fever pitch and bursting into its main atonal, bending riff. This is just the mere beginning of ‘When You Stare’ from Blackened post-Hardcore outfit, Glassing, a band clearly out to not just pique interest, but demand attention. The vocals have an ominous amount of reverb to them, giving the same halfway-down-a-corridor feel of the likes of early Emperor or any Black Metal luminaries for that matter. The actual screaming itself, however, has far more in common with contemporaries like Tripsitter and We Never Learned To Live, with its strained and passionate delivery evoking repressed tender emotions rather than scathing the eardrums with rhapsodies of hellfire.Continue reading
High Reeper – Higher Reeper
One of my more favorite quotable lines of recent memory comes from Avengers: Infinity War. Spoiler alert for those who have not seen it, or lived under a rock. When Thor meets the Guardians of the Galaxy, ends up on their ship The Milano, and engages in some snappy banter,, this is the thing tickling my funny bone. When Thor exclaims they need to proceed to Nidavellir, and when posed with the reply that’s a made-up word, he replies “All words are made up.” This is not only funny but it’s true! And it made me think about what else, music. Specifically how all sub-genres are made up and in context to all the music we hear. One year after their sizzling debut, it’s time to enjoy this bitching brand new and totally badass High Reeper album, Higher Reeper (Heavy Psych Sounds).Continue reading

Coven – Sanhedrin: Live At Le Poisson Rouge
Coven, occult, unholy and gleefully wicked. They have carved an unholy history across fifty years of rock and roll blasphemy. When they descended on Le Poisson Rouge for their first New York City show in decades the scenes devout congregated in worship. After a stunning opening set from Brooklyn hometown heroes, Sanhedrin the hour of doom was nigh. As the band strode out with a swaggering version of ‘Black Sabbath’ (The Coven song predates Iommi and co’s version by a year) and caroming through renditions of ‘Wicked Woman’ and the ‘White Witch of Rosehall’, this is a group at the height of their powers. Exciting, over the top and gloriously satanic, Coven is on top of the world and ready to destroy minds and reap souls. Devout fans take note, Prophecy Productions will be releasing a 50-year anniversary box set to celebrate the band in 2019! Continue reading
Psycho Las Vegas 2018: Live From Hard Rock Hotel And Casino
Psycho Las Vegas has grown and evolved over the years and has shaken off any comparisons to niche European fests and your traditional US fest, itself having no close comparisons, and being its own beast. Having everything under one roof including your stay can lead to late and debaucherous nights for some, packed and planned diverse schedules for the devout, a little compromise of both for others, but an all around good time for all. For a journalist working the fest, it goes by in a blur but you still experience having those stand out moments as well as highlights of your own. Continue reading
Maryland Deathfest 2018 – Baltimore Maryland
For a metal fan, especially an underground metal fan with a cultured taste, Maryland Deathfest is the holy grail of music festivals. They are metal fans, so they understand metal fans. It has grown by leaps and bounds like a little cottage industry with California Deathfest, Quebec Deathfest, Netherlands Deathfest, Days of Darkness and more to come I’m sure. As I attended my first ever full weekend, I saw incredible bands on my bucket list, met a lot of great people from all over the world, hung out with friends and basically had more fun than I could imagine. It was basically summer camp for die-hard metal fans. No judgments, no fights, no fake kung fu in the mosh pit, just all awesomeness 24/7. Fun for families and even dogs. Plus Natty Bo’s and cheap and delicious street tacos! Continue reading
