When you think of heavy music, images of raw power, defiance, and innovation come to mind—and Black creators have been at the forefront of this movement. Although often underestimated, these innovative musicians are known for their groundbreaking music, which blends punk’s rebellious spirit, metal’s intensity, and unique artistry. I’m a drummer and I’ve done Thrash, Crossover, and Death Metal projects over the years, some known, some not so much. But here in New York, I’ve grown up seeing everyone on stage. So this Black History Month, I want to show off the sounds of ten essential bands shaped by Black visionaries who have left an indelible mark on the world of heavy music. Rising Pulse Records, the label owned by John LaMacchia of Candiria, is hosting a 10-year anniversary party this week at Brooklyn Bazaar in Brooklyn. The show will be headlined by Candiria, along with Recon, Netherlands, NYHC veterans Locked In A Vacancy, and SevenSuns. Rising Pulse has been a foil for John to release incredible, challenging music from his own Spylacopa, and also Julie Christmas, Meek Is Murder, Kevin Hufnagel, A Family Plot, Morn and more. Candiria Announces Beyond Reasonable Doubt Anniversary Tour And Vinyl Reissue
Candiria recently headlined Black Light Media’s label showcase in New York City and celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Beyond Reasonable Doubt, their seminal 1990s New York Hardcore classic. The band has now announced a tour honoring that record, which their label Metal Blade will release a collectors edition of the album on vinyl and cd. Direct support n the tour will come from Cleric, and the band will make an appearance at New England Hardcore and Metal Festival. All tour dates on sale now. The Vans Warped Tour. Twenty-Three years of a traveling road show that showcases a plethora of bands. Some people thumb their nose up as it being full of emo wannabes or full of bands no one has heard before. But those people ignore the fact that this is an institution. I think I finally found an instance when it’s cool to use the term avant-garde. If any band falls under that most radical of musical distinctions it’s probably going to be Tombs with their fourth full-length, The Grand Annihilation (Metal Blade).
