REVIEWS ROUND-UP: ft – Haystack – Rough Justice – Crawling Through Tartarus – Dwarrowdelf

When Entombed followed Uffe Cederlund’s vision and produced the divisive Same Difference in 1998, the direction and sound that incorporated a hefty dose of Unsane and Cederlund’s other project, Haystack, was quickly parked following an overwhelmingly negative response -it’s genuinely not a bad record at all, with hindsight – Senior Ed], and the Stockholm massive returned to their HM-2 Death n’ Roll stylings. 

Haystack, too, fell by the wayside for over two decades, too. The resurrection continues, though, with second album since their return, and fourth overall, Doomsday Goes Away (The Dogma Repertory Institute/Threeman Recordings).

INTERVIEW: Oberst Talks Upcoming Album “Toil”, Favorite Deathwish Inc. Rosters, and Best Gig Experiences

The four-piece, Oslo-based act Oberst started embarking on a continuous sonic journey in 2015. Initially formed out of mutual love and passion for music, the quartet then found common interest in bands like Mastodon, Baroness, Converge, and Cult of Luna. Their music is mostly a combination between hardcore, post-metal, and progressive metal, strongly characterized by atmospheric riffs and intense vocals resulting in captivating resonances.

Having received critical acclaim on their self-titled debut EP, the band has received a lot of media coverage as well such as being featured on the Norwegian TV series Unge Lovende and having their EP played by the Norwegian national radio. Continue reading →


ALBUM REVIEW: Slope – Freak Dreams

You would not expect a band from Germany to have become as stricken by a plague that makes their booty move as Slope has on their new album “Freak Dreams” (Century Media Records). The slapped bass and in-your-face energy might make more sense if it were being delivered by skater punks from Southern California in the summer of 1989. Slope wastes no time laying out their own uplifting mofo party plan. This unique approach sounds like it could catch on much, in the same manner, Turnstile proved audiences are ready for more grooves and tired of the same old same old. “It’s Tickin” proves that the band is not just living off of the nostalgia for 90s funk rock, though it does have doses of that as well. ALBUM REVIEW: Almost Dead – Destruction Is All We Know

In 2024, opening your album with a song about warheads falling from the sky is not only timely but casts you as the needed herald of this year’s coming apocalypse and Almost Dead proves themselves to be up for the job on the aptly titled, Destruction Is All We Know (Innerstrength Records).

While they mix thrash and hardcore influences, an important detail when you take into consideration the thrash bands whose names stood the test of time, are those that did so by writing songs that were not only memorable, but employed singers whose voices stood out and did not default to having the vocals a mere obligatory afterthought.
