ALBUM REVIEW: Movements – RUCKUS
Ever since their debut album, Feel Something, blew up in 2017, the massive surge of dedicated fans have held Southern California post-hardcore and emo band Movements to a high standard when it comes to follow-up material. As the group grows older, their music continues to grow with them, as made evident with their 2020 release No Good Left To Give, and now their third full-length album, RUCKUS! (Fearless Records). While the band is no longer the same sad boys they started out as, there are still pieces of their old selves mixed into their new, matured evolution, with RUCKUS! about to elicit a peculiar balance of dancing, moshing, and crying.
ALBUM REVIEW: Pierce the Veil – The Jaws of Life
Thanks to TikTok trends resurrecting decade-old (and older) pop-punk and emo hits and spreading them like wildfire to a new surge of listeners, there has been a nostalgic Noughties emo revival. Between the majorly sentimental lineup of the When We Were Young Fest and bands like My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Thursday, Blink-182, Sunny Day Real Estate, and others, snapping out of hiatus and flooding stages once again, it should come as no surprise that Pierce the Veil is rejoining the ranks.
ALBUM REVIEW: Varials – Scars For You To Remember
Scars For You To Remember (Fearless Records) is the third full-length album from a Philadelphia-based five-piece that has created an engaging slice of industrialized post-hardcore, that will find a willing audience from fans of Code Orange and the like. Varials spent six weeks together holed up in a remote mountain house writing, before locking down in the studio and recording with producer Jeff McKinnon (Broken Youth / Lasciate).
ALBUM REVIEW: Until I Wake – Inside My Head
Having formed in Buffalo, New York only two years ago in the midst of the pandemic, metalcore quartet Until I Wake have rapidly managed to create a name for themselves in a style that some are beginning to consider outdated. ALBUM REVIEW: I Prevail – True Power
I Prevail, when they revealed themselves to the world with their breakout Taylor Swift cover, could only be described as bursting onto the scene. Since then the post-hardcore group has become one of the most exciting bands out today. Smashing out more hits in two albums than some bands accomplish in their whole career. In their last release Trauma, the band delved into different external influences bringing rapping into their songwriting, will True Power carry on this trend?
CONCERT REVIEW: Chain Fest – Jimmy Eat World – Taking Back Sunday – Circa Survive and Others: Live at Fivepoint Amphitheatre
A year ago there were no shows to attend, let alone tours or festivals. As we claw our way slowly out of the darkest time in recent history as music fans, and concert goers (and photogs and writers too) the specialness of even the average show is not going to be taken for granted right now. So the return of Chain Fest, which has sprouted a life of its own after a humble beginning as the flagship event for Anaheim, California’s Chain Reaction, is huge for fans and really, the entire SoCal scene. While Chain Reaction remains a vital venue for bands, Chain Fest has kind of become a monster, growing every year and expanding to the Fivepoint Amphitheatre. When it was announced for 2021 and sold out pretty fast you could tell the excitement was high. Chain fest not only features special bands from Punk, Indie, Emo, and post-Hardcore, but always features bands doing special sets you can’t see anywhere else. We are all kind of living in a 2021 Punk version of Almost Famous where “it’s all happening” all the time!
