Many have guessed what will be the soundtrack of the apocalypse. Poland’s 71TonMan has submitted its idea of such a soundscape. I believe they have a damn good shot with their latest album Of End Times (Transcending Obscurity). All of the heavy influences of doom and sludge metal, with small doses of black metal to cover some of the occult or taboo. Four tracks, averaging ten minutes each, bring this colossal death monolith to life.
Knowing well who, or what, Full of Hell and Primitive Man are separate, it is no surprise what to expect should these forces ever collide. Suffocating Hallucination (Closed Casket Activities) is just the very chaotic collaboration I expected, but even more sonically harsh and violent than originally thought. Five tracks drag you relentlessly through a half hour of torture and misery. To make this clear, these are all compliments of what is a literal, aural trip through Hell itself.
Trove Of Oddities At The Devil’s Driveway (Heavy Psych Sounds) is the fourth full-length release from France’s Witchthroat Serpent. Recorded in single live takes to analog tape at Brittany’s Kerwax Studio, the record is described as being “slower…darker and more evil” that its predecessors, and “an invocation to Satan”.
After years of no gigs, many festivals moved, or revamped. Into the Void has been around a while, but this year is the first time it is held in Eindhoven, Just one day we have 11 bands to get through in the Effenaar, with a nice mix of genres that the Club Void shows also share. Given the rather solid line-up for those who love Stoner, Doom Metal, Psych, and even some post-Metal, Ghost Cult went to have a look.
A brand new supergroup has formed with legends of Doom Metal including members of Type of Negative, Crowbar, and Down dubbed EYE AM. The news was revealed in a post from Florida metal label Corpsepaint Records! The band consists of Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative and Silvertomb on guitar and drums, Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, Down, and Kingdom of Sorrow, and Todd Strange, formerly of Crowbar and Down. The debut single will be recorded by bassist Roger Lima of Less Than Jake.

I have said it before and will say it again, finding new music that instantly grabs your attention is one of the best ways to fill your system with dopamine. Blackened Grindcore threesome, Tithe, has done this with their sophomore release, Inverse Rapture (Profound Lore). In just seven tracks and under a half-hour, your brain will be torn apart and put back together by the Portland, Oregon natives. Equal parts black metal and grindcore, with some doom sprinkled over the top, makes for a fresh look on the harsher side of heavy music.

Gaerea had a 2022 about as good as any Extreme Metal band, with the release of their third full-length album Mirage driving forward their sound and eloquently merging ferocious Black Metal with elements of heavy “post-” music to create a unique style, on a record that was one of the finest of the year. And during this period of creativity vocalist and guitarist Guilherme Henriques would continue to develop his Oak side project with former drummer Pedro Soares, which had begun when the two were writing and recording Gaerea’s debut album Unsettling Whispers in 2018.
