ALBUM REVIEW: Tithe – Inverse Rapture

I have said it before and will say it again, finding new music that instantly grabs your attention is one of the best ways to fill your system with dopamine. Blackened Grindcore threesome, Tithe, has done this with their sophomore release, Inverse Rapture (Profound Lore). In just seven tracks and under a half-hour, your brain will be torn apart and put back together by the Portland, Oregon natives. Equal parts black metal and grindcore, with some doom sprinkled over the top, makes for a fresh look on the harsher side of heavy music.

Inverse Rapture immediately begins with ‘Anthropogenic Annihilation’ with an intro that includes creepy string bends over doom-inspired drum work. This theme returns throughout the track in between the firestorm of grindcore-influenced black metal.

At just over two minutes long, ‘Demon’ is an unrelenting, chaotic, sonic firestorm to the sense that does not let up. In the second half of the song there are little moments of slam that poke through to give your neck a rest.

‘Luciferian Pathways Of The Forked Tongue’ lurks at the end of the album and kicks off with more eerie guitar riffs over blast-beat drums. Just past the ninety-second mark, caveman riffage graces our ears as a welcome break from headbanging, but the need for throwing elbows will become all too real.

Tithe is certainly a new group for me and I am glad I was able to start off with this quick and dirty album. Inverse Rapture is equally aggressive as it is psychedelic at times, almost hypnotizing, and this is going to stick with me through the rest of the year for sure.

If feeling uncomfortable listening to music is something you strive for, then do not sleep on this solid record from an up-and-coming blackened grind band!
