Scarborough’s Fortress Festival has revealed ten more bands set to perform at the black metal event, June 01 – 02, 2024. Set to take place at the iconic Scarborough Spa in North Yorkshire, the festival has unveiled main stage headliners, Triptykon and Wolves in the Throne Room, and one second stage headliner, Regarde Les Hommes Tomber. I was not supposed to be at this show. I was in Germany for Wacken butthe rain had other ideas. As I scrambled to figure out new plans, I searched concerts happening across Germany and came across this one, so I rented a car and hit the Autobahn for the 4.5-hour journey from Hemmingstedt to the UT Connewitz in Leipzig. The venue which felt like an underground concrete bomb shelter, was slow to fill with fans. Gaerea had a 2022 about as good as any Extreme Metal band, with the release of their third full-length album Mirage driving forward their sound and eloquently merging ferocious Black Metal with elements of heavy “post-” music to create a unique style, on a record that was one of the finest of the year. And during this period of creativity vocalist and guitarist Guilherme Henriques would continue to develop his Oak side project with former drummer Pedro Soares, which had begun when the two were writing and recording Gaerea’s debut album Unsettling Whispers in 2018.
