Ukrainian blackened stoic sentinels 1914 conjure their fourth full-length pantheon, Viribus Unitis (Napalm Records), Latin for “With United Forces.” The colossi title unveils the resilience through destruction and malice brought from war, building on the band’s acclaimed concept, delving further into vehemence and severity. FEATURE: Who Would Step In for Peter Steele for a Theoretical Type O Negative Tribute Concert?
Ghost Cult scribe Wil Cifer ponders the previously unthinkable – what if there was a Type o Negative tribute concert to the late Peter Steele and to the bands’ legacy? Who would be able to fill those massive shoes and do proper justice to The Green Man, we all love so dearly. This is speculative and just a bit of playful, educated spell casting, nothing more. Peter is irreplacaeble, and we know that.
CONCERT REVIEW: Paradise Lost – Messa – High Parasite Live at KK’S Steel Mill
Seeing as summer is fast becoming a memory, I figured it was time to check my weather app before setting off this evening. With poor visibility due to dense fog, the forecast, leaving earlier than usual was definitely a wise move, but strangely, this apparently widespread, impenetrable wall of mist never actually materialised. However, soon after entering KK’s Steel Mill the reason became clear. With three bands of varying Goth persuasions on the bill, all the fog in the country was inside.

ALBUM REVIEW: Godthrymm – Distortions
And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. Blank canvas. Blank page. No words. Then came … Poetry. Psalms. Hymns. The power and the glory. OMG – Oh My Godthrymm! This is the one, my good brothers – one for the ages, one for the rampages, the spillages, the courageous.
ALBUM REVIEW: Grief Symposium – …In The Absence of Light
What was the first bit of heavy music you ever heard in your life? Did you level up, gaining mana from the ear-peeling riffs and shouts? Lovers of extreme metal surely have had experiences like this in their lives, where their entire world is tossed upside-down a new band, or a clutch of new demos from an emerging scene. This is how my ears felt hearing Grief Symposium, with a new take on the Death / Doom sub-genre with their debut, …In The Absence of Light (Church Road Records). Although mysterious and secretive, they did not set out to reinvent extreme music, but rather invent themselves, and a sound that should echo for a long time.
ALBUM REVIEW: MMXX – Sacred Cargo
A new doom metal “supergroup” releasing a COVID-19 lockdown album in late 2022. That sentence, which describes MMXX‘ Sacred Cargo (Candlelight) in plain terms, will no doubt inspire a variety of different thoughts and feelings in people with an interest in such things. Some might dismiss the concept (album) out of hand. After all, the band’s name translates as “2020” and, well, not only is it not 2020 anymore, but the mere mention of that year is liable to inspire at least a wearied eye-roll if not a flashback to genuine out-and-out despair.
ALBUM REVIEW: Psalm Zero – Sparta
The more disparate aspects influence a band, the more it’s able to grow. Psalm Zero‘s music prior to the new album Sparta (Last Things Records) was all aggravated Indie, the tunes given an edge by guitarist Andrew Hock. With his departure and the subsequent recruitment of Kayo Dot pairing Keith Abrams and Ron Vodun, remaining founder member Charlie Looker has added a warmer, heavier feel to the Grungey lightness and this, together with a tantalising contribution from Lingua Ignota‘s Kristin Hayter, makes the album an enticing prospect.Continue reading
ALBUM REVIEW: My Dying Bride – The Ghost Of Orion
Hot on the heels of ex-bandmate Hamish Glencross’s latest effort with new band Godthrymm comes The Ghost Of Orion (Nuclear Blast), the fourteenth full-length from Yorkshire Gothic Doom royalty My Dying Bride. This year celebrating 30 years as an entity, any pressure the band may have felt is counteracted by an expectedly assured, emotionally raw performance that comes with such craftsmanship and experience.Continue reading
