For years, Conan has shaped themselves into one of the heaviest bands on the planet. With their fifth release, Evidence of Immortality (Napalm Records), they maintain sole possession of that throne with their enemies’ heads at their feet. While the “caveman battle doom” pioneers have their own sound, they continue to push their own boundaries of their older releases ever so slightly to keep everyone coming back for more. ALBUM REVIEW: Moths – Space Force
Moths, the five-piece stoner/prog outfit from San Juan, Puerto Rico, take a voyage into space on their debut LP. As cosmic and inter-galactic as the results are, this mission perhaps required more focus, more direction and a tad more discipline. The myriad metal genres, frequently-changing time signatures and disparate musical sections idiosyncratically grafted together into songs can make it hard to grasp or nail down any plan behind it all.

ALBUM REVIEW: Telekinetic Yeti – Primordial
The fabulously named Iowa-based duo Telekinetic Yeti release Primordial their follow up the rather excellent Abominable on Tee Pee Records, and appropriately it’s a beast.
Notably minimalist in its composition, which serves to emphasize the satisfyingly abrasive low end, title track Primordial kicks off proceedings with a very potent low and slow deep groove. This is made even more impressive by the lack of a bass player.Continue reading
ALBUM REVIEW: Aptera – You Can’t Bury What Still Burns
Aptera is here with their debut full-length album,You Can’t Bury What Still Burns (Ripple Music). Taking their name from the battle site between sirens and muses (that’s metal as fuck!), Aptera is an all-female foursome who performs some heavy seventies-inspired doom / sludge. Continue reading
ALBUM REVIEW: Oreyeon – Equations For The Useless
Italian stoner rockers Oreyeon release their third album Equations For The Useless (Heavy Psych Sounds), a potent mix of stoner, grunge, heavy rock, and lengthier progressive compositions. This album notably draws on the influences of years gone by not only in style but was also recorded live, an approach to a recording I’m very much a fan of.
ALBUM REVIEW: Deathwhite – Grey Everlasting
The very essence of doom metal is not for everyone, what with its bumper-to-bumper pacing and tame singing. In some cases, the very notion of metal is difficult to pick apart from the rest of the music.
ALBUM REVIEW Black Lung – Dark Waves
It is a time of change for the Baltimore based psych-doom three piece Black Lung, who following the release of their third album Ancients in 2019, parted ways with founding guitarist Adam Bufano, replacing him with Deaf Scene’s Dave Fullerton. Four months later and their subsequent tour of the album was cancelled as the pandemic struck, so the band decided to regroup and start working on fresh material with their new guitar player straight away.
