Woven Man – Revelry (In Our Arms)

Those of us who developed a fondness for sludgey goodness back in the days of its infancy will have a soft spot for Welsh sluggers Acrimony, who blazed (!) an early trail for the sub-genre in the UK. While most of that band went on to found the Stoner grooves of Sigiriya, Lee ‘Roy’ Davies has drifted through guises until settling in the present day, and Woven Man: an outfit tipping its cap to The Wicker Man and aspects of his former band, which shine throughout debut album Revelry (In Our Arms) (Undergroove).Continue reading

Ghost – Prequelle

Since the release of their debut album in 2010, Swedish act Ghost has divided the Metal community like no other band has for years. Frequently berated for a seemingly endless list of equally meaningless reasons, you just know the band are laughing themselves stupid underneath their masks each time the latest horde of terminally outraged cynics appear, summoned to their keyboards, as if by magic, whenever the word “Ghost” is mentioned on the internet, to inform the world using block capitals that “they’re just ripping off Blue Öyster Cult and Mercyful Fate”, “they’re not metal”, or “they’re only a gimmick anyway” etc. etc.

Yawn.Continue reading

Parkway Drive – Reverence

Ok, ok, complete transparency here from me to begin with. I happen to be a massive fan of Parkway Drive. From the very first time I heard the now classic record Horizons (Epitaph) the band have had my undying attention and indeed love. They became the absolute pinnacle and standout Metalcore act of the mid to late 00’s with heaviness and hooks in all the right places. Then came 2015’s Ire (Epitaph) and what greeted fans was one of the most divisive records of that year as PD chose to veer in many different stylistic directions but still managed to retains their innate knack for combining the catchy and the crushing. Frank “Killjoy” Pucci Of Necrophagia Dead At Age 48

Shock and sadness is felt today in the music world of death metal originator and Necrophagia founder Frank “Killjoy” Pucci has died. He was 48. The announcement of his passing was made from the bands’ Facebook page. Killjoy founded Necrophagia in 1983, as one of the first true death metal bands, but also flirted with black metal and other subgenres. He also famously collaborated with Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint), joining to reform Necrophagia in 1997 and then Killjoy himself joining two of Anselmo’s side projects, Viking Crown and Eibon. Other projects Killjoy participated in were Wurdulak, The Ravenous, and Cabal, and produced albums for other bands.Continue reading

Phillip H. Anselmo & The Illegals – Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue

Can we truly separate the art from the artist? It’s the question I’ve been ruminating in my dining room while listening to Phillip H. Anselmo & The IllegalsChoosing Mental Illness as a Virtue (Season of Mist). An onstage stunt involving Nazi salutes transpired at a tribute show in early 2016 and ever since then I haven’t had the keenest impression of Anselmo. Several non-apologies have ensued and I’m not sure if we’ll ever get any closure. Continue reading
