The Punk Rock MBA Examines “What Killed Death Metal?”

Cannibal Corpse, by Evil Robb Photography

If you don’t follow The Punk Rock MBA, the YouTube channel run by music and marketing expert Finn McKenty, you are missing out! We are huge fans of his! His videos explore all of your favorite genres of music, their rise and sometimes fall. He uses the “what killed____” tag to get people interested, but clearly, he means in a commercial cultural way, not the death or a genre, as in the case of death metal. He discusses the main bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Bolt Thrower, Mortician, Incantation, and Suffocation, Cynic, Suffocation, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding, Entombed, Dismember, the cultural forces that led to its popularity (Ace Venture Pet Detective and Beavis and Butthead) and more! Vltimas – Something Wicked Marches In

The term Supergroup is often used to describe any band consisting of musicians from other acts and thus disappointing when it ends up lacking household names, or consisting of dream groupings who do not live up to the expectation their legacy suggests.

Fortunately, new entity Vltimas have offered a debut that smashes those notions.

Made up of former Mayhem man Blasphemer, Cryptopsy’s Flo Mounier and David Vincent (formerly of Morbid Angel), Vltimas is a solid who’s who of Extreme Metal royalty. Notably, this is Vincent’s first Metal outing since the polarising Illud Divinum Insanus (Season of Mist), thus potentially leaving him with a point to prove. Fortunately, it doesn’t take long for Something Wicked Marches In (Season of Mist) to ease any lingering doubts there.Continue reading

Undead Prophecies – Sempiternal Void

I’m beginning to notice a bit of a trend amongst modern Death Metal bands, and by beginning to notice I mean this has probably been happening for a while now. Loads of newer acts like Horrendous and Gruesome are quite eager to strap on the Nike high tops, leather jackets and reminisce about the good old days when guys like Chuck Schuldiner and his outfit Death were blowing the Thrash dudes out of the water with albums like Scream Bloody Gore or Spiritual Healing. Undead PropheciesSempiternal Void (Listenable Records) sure as shit sounds like they’ve been inhaling the ash of whatever’s left of Morrisound Recordings.Continue reading

Misery Index – Rituals Of Power

I think as Extreme Metal fans we can all agree that we were getting a little antsy awaiting new music from Baltimore’s loudest sons, Misery Index. Watching the news every day through my fingers I know that the world and a certain leader are shit, so I figured Misery Index are in no shortage of material to convert into awesome grind sounds. But wait no more, children; Rituals Of Power (Season of Mist) is finally here.Continue reading

Incite – Built To Destroy

“Actions speak as loud as words!” is the roared hook in ‘Leech’, a combustible, fist-swinging mid-album anthem, as Incite know that, five albums in, there is no resting on their laurels. One of a host of bands caught in a mosh, struggling and jostling for position to tip them from the mid-tier; definitely proficient but without that mainstream or commercial weight to establish them as true heavyweights in their field.Continue reading

Cannibal Corpse Taps Erik Rutan Of Hate Eternal To Fill In For Pat O’Brien

Cannibal Corpse have announced that Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal will fill in for guitarist Pat O’Brien he deals with his personal issues. Rutan will tour Decibel Magazine Tour and the upcoming US leg of Slayer’s final tour happening this May joined by Lamb of God, and Amon Amarth. This won’t be the first time these death metal powerhouses have worked together; Rutan has produced four albums with Cannibal Corpse (Kill, Evisceration Plague, Torture, Red Before Black, all Metal Blade) and is uniquely equipped to fill the role – he is one of the death metal’s most acclaimed guitarists and is known for his time as part of Morbid Angel (who are co-headlining the Decibel tour alongside Cannibal) throughout the 90s and early 2000s, as well as handling vocals/guitars and production duties for Hate Eternal.Continue reading

Festerday- iihtallan

To say the history of Finnish Death Metallers Festerday is convoluted is like saying that the British Tory government has had a few mishaps recently. In a, sort of, thirty-year history, the band have undergone several changes of moniker and style, only returning to the name Festerday back in 2013, maintaining much of their core from 1989 with a line-up that has only taken a slight change since their return with Jani Kuoppamaa joining on drums. After a string of EP releases and splits in their early incarnation, this month sees them finally release a full-length debut in the solid, if unspectacular, iihtallan (Season Of Mist), where perhaps this varied history has had an impact.Continue reading
