Austin Psych Fest 2025 Books Dinosaur Jr, Kim Gordon, Explosions in the Sky, Darkside, Kadavar, Georgie Greep, Yo La Tengo, Godspeed You Black Emperor and more

Austin Psych Fest 2025 brings another slate of indie rock icons, experimental rock and tripped-out sounds – from shoegaze to psychedelic rock and cumbia – to the big South Austin backyard at The Far Out LoungeThe event has always taken an expansive interpretation of psychedelia, exploring the outer edges of the musical spectrum that continue to be informed and inspired by 1960s sonic experimentation, and a penchant for loud guitars and plenty of reverb. This year’s lineup is no different. Friday night is topped off with post-rock titans EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, and GODSPEED! YOU BLACK EMPEROR, two artists who have conjured up wildly emotive and ethereal music, without any words – a testament to the sheer power of music. Heavy psych rockers BLACK MOUNTAIN and KADAVAR round out Day One, with Austin experimentalists OCTOPUS PROJECT and more. Saturday night brings electronic psych explorers DARKSIDE, indie icon KIM GORDON fresh off her recent Grammy nomination, the cosmic grooves of electro rock outfit STRFKR, art rock auteur GEORDIE GREEP plus WOMBO, SASAMI and more on Day Two. Day Three brings it all together with 90s guitar rock icons DINOSAUR JR playing their landmark album Without A Sound, co-headlining with beloved indie rock trio YO LA TENGO, joined by Peruvian cumbia legends LOS MIRLOS, viral UK alt rockers BÔA, Seattle quartet LA LUZ, luminary DEAN WAREHAM of GALAXIE 500 playing tracks from the band’s legendary discography, and more incredible tunes from MYSTERY LIGHTS, HOLY WAVE and more, with additional acts for the weekend to be announced.Continue reading

With their eighth album — No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead (Constellation Records) — Canadian post-rock collective Godspeed You! ALBUM REVIEW: Je Est Un Autre – Flatworm Mysticism

As one half of the infamous Funeral Doom Metal band Bell Witch, Dylan Desmond is a musician renowned for powerful and contemplative soundscapes and is no stranger for emotive music. Following from the band’s Patreon launch a couple of years ago, Desmond has since been prominently experimenting with Ambient, synth-led music in part made to accompany segments of films (as anyone who has seen Bell Witch live will attest to their use of visual artistry in their performances). A further result of this is this solo output Je Est Un Autre, with a moniker taken from quotes of surrealist poet Arthur Rimbaud which, unsurprisingly, is a deep thought-provoking piece. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Divide and Dissolve – Systemic – Invada Records

The duo of Divide and Dissolve are passionate about their beliefs. The question we shall explore here is does that equate to effectively making memorable music?  Many musicians have strong beliefs that they feel drives their passion to create and having a conviction about those beliefs is admirable.

ALBUM REVIEW: Isafjord – Hjartastjaki

Hjartastjaki (Svart) is an almost cinematic experience, as Isafjord create bleak and desolate landscape pictures with their sombre atmospheric music. The duo of Solstafir vocalist Addi Tryggvason and multi-instrumentalist Ragnar Zolberg (Sign) wrote the album while holed up together in an old house, during the depths of an icy winter and using a broken piano to start many of their ideas.

ALBUM REVIEW: The Otolith – Folium Limina

My first encounter with SubRosa’s music was back in 2016 as an eighteen year-old who had just gotten a headstart into music journalism, just right after they released For This We Fought the Battle of Ages. That 2016 release was especially remarkable for my eighteen year-old self, because, apart from its droning resonance in a form of menacing atmospheric doom that would drive the listeners into a solemn state of enchantment, the album was also inspired by Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We, a Russia-bound dystopian novel that portrays a state ravaged by modern-day authoritative surveillance; an uncanny prediction towards the terror of the Stalinist regime in real life. The theme and inspiration of the said SubRosa album just instantly ignited the politically conscious side in me at the time.
