Nader Sadek – The Malefic: Chapter III

Nader-Sadek-The-Malefic-Chapter-III

This is a curious proposition. With previous albums and now this EP release The Malefic: Chapter III (self-released), Nader Sadek is a death metal super-group which has seen a variety of members on its releases, all curated by its namesake, one Nader Sadek, who has worked as stage artist for the likes of Mayhem and Sunn O))).

On this latest reincarnation, the personnel includes Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation on vocals, Rune Eriksen (Mayhem), Martin Rygiel (formerly Decapitated) and Flo Mounier (of Cryptopsy fame). Following on from the album In The Flesh (Season Of Mist), which was an impressive slice of death metal if lacking in some cohesion and clear production, this latest EP does see some refining. The production here has a lot more clarity and precision without sounding sanitized, whilst musically it sounds a united and flowing piece, and more straightforward in nature. The vocal contributions of Ryan truly stand out, further showcasing his presence as one of death metal’s most versatile and powerful voices.

A crisp, impressive EP which will admittedly won’t turn the genre on its head but represents a good exhibition of the talents of those in its ranks. Not a world beater, but worth a listen.

Rage Nucléaire – Black Storm of Violence

Rage-Nucleaire-Black-Storm-of-Violence-_2B-Unrelenting-Fucking-Hatred-38748-2_3

This is a black metal album. I like black metal. It has the occasional death metal moment. Lord Worm is handling the vocals. Fredrik Widigs, current skinsman for Marduk, is laying down the blast beats. On paper this seems awesome. Like really fucking awesome. But yet why after a few listens today doesn’t it feel awesome all the way through?

For those uninitiated, Rage Nucléaire, is Lord Worm’s post-Cryptopsy vehicle for blasphemy and mayhem. And while I’ll always have a spot in my heart for the Cryptopsy days of old, it’s neat to see Lord Worm still active and applying his unique pipes to some other stylings.

Black Storm of Violence (Season of Mist) is the follow-up to Rage Nucléaire’s 2012 aptly-titled debut, Unrelenting Fucking Hatred. All the elements that made that debut so compelling are for the most part still here, including first and foremost Widigs wild drumming. Seriously, this guy can drive home a blast beat. Hence his barbaric displays like ‘Annihilation Frenzy’ and ‘A Sino-American Chainsaw War.’ Or he can slow it down like ‘Goddess of Filth’ or ‘The Deadfall Triptych,’ which also make room for almost melodic passages from guitarist Dark Rage and keyboardist Alvater.

Then Black Storm of Violence starts to lose me. Sounding more like black metal (corpse) paint by numbers than true kvlt. Even Lord Worm’s trademark shrieks and howls are marred by processing. It’s Anaal Nathrakh without the psychotic seventh gear. If anything, Rage Nucléaire could borrow some of the Anaal magic. Aim for shorter, even further needle-in-the-red intense songs.

While the music more often than not runs on the right track, the samples seem more afterthought than ambiance inducing. We are treated to a greatest hits of black metal clichés including classics such as marching soldiers, gunfire, wolves and Hellraiser. When the first line you hear is a sample from a Rob Zombie film, you can’t help but wonder if this feels less Transylvanian Hunger and more Damnation and a Day. Also, I think Charles Manson would really appreciate it if people would stop using his “If I started murdering people…” bit. It sounded cool when Integrity used it in 1995, but at this point even Manson must be sick of it.

This is band that has a great black metal album in them if they focus more on the quality of the songs as opposed to what appears to be truly “evil” or “kvlt.” Lord Worm has already been on a death metal classic, let’s hope he can do it again with black metal.

Blastfest 2015 Adds Four more Bands

Blastfest 2014 Poster

Norways Blastfest is expanding to a four-day festival with over 60 bands due to perform. The festival, located in Bergen will run from the 18th to the 21st February and will feature performances from the likes of At The Gates, Paradise Lost and Primordial.

Press Release:
Blastfest Is Expanding!

Blastfest has accepted the challenge and has delivered! It is official, Blastfest will be even bigger! With very positive results and excitement of a recent poll, the Bergen, Norway festival have decided 3 days of metal madness wasn’t enough and have expanded the festival into a 4 day event with a total of 60 bands! That’s 4 days, 4 venues, and 60 bands! Yes. 60 BANDS! The festival is now running from Wednesday February 18th to Saturday February 21st.

And that’s not just the only announcement the festival will make today because just like the recent state of updates the festival are keeping form and have just confirmed another 4 bands to the already exploding poster! So without further adieu, we are pleased to report the addition of true Norwegian black metal veterans Gehenna, British symphonic black metallers Hecate Enthroned, Norwegian death metal titans Blood Red Throne and death thrashers Wyruz!

Gehenna
Gehenna
All of our grenade prayers have been answered; the word became flesh! It’s with a shivering voice of the utmost excitement that Blastfest welcome Norwegian black metallersGehenna to the lineup of 2015! These purveyors of the dark arts have long been regarded as one of the most important acts to come out of the Norwegian black metal scene in the 90’s. It’s therefore with great delight that the festival welcome them back to Bergen for their first ever Blastfest performance.

Hecate Enthroned
Hecate Enthroned
Back in the 90’s a band made its way to the forefront of the symphonic black metal scene alongside bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, receiving praise for their ability to be both extreme in their expression as well as incorporating symphonic elements. We are of course talking about UK act Hecate Enthroned. As of today the band is still going strong, if not turning towards an ever heavier expression with their now death metal-infused take on the black arts. Blastfest are very pleased to have them cross the North Sea to perform live in Bergen for the very first time ever, as part of the festival!

Blood Red Throne
Blood Red Throne
If you were asked to name a Norwegian death metal band, chances are that the first name to enter into your mind would be that of Blood Red Throne. Ever since the release of their first four-track demo back in 2000, they have been a household name in death metal circles. It’s therefore with great pride that Blastfest welcome the ravenous war machine, the primitive killing machine that is Blood Red Throne into the fold. Be prepared for blood spatter and arterial lust!

Wyruz
Wyruz
Some say Blastfest needed to add more thrash metal to the lineup, so they have decided to include prime death/thrash act Wyruz! These guys have been going strong for over a decade now, and are dead set on destroying everything at Blastfest 2015.

Beyond Creation – The Aura

Beyond Creation 1Beyond Creation is Canadian technical metal goodness. Having just signed to Relapse Records, this Montreal, Quebec quartet unleashed a sonic beast of beauty here, with their re-issue of The Aura. It’s really ballsy and impressive to have songs from just under two minutes run all the way to ten minute long epics, and not be the least bit boring. The production is so full and crisp; it has that “in the room” feeling you just can’t fake. I can gush about this debut easily, and I shall. This album screams “we practiced ten hours a day!”, but the important thing here is not just that they are true to their tech death roots, but they can actually write great songs. Many bands have the talent to do it, but few can pull it off.Continue reading

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Neurotic Deathfest – 013 Tilburg

IniquityEvery avid fan of death metal drools with pleasure when Neurotic Deathfest comes to town again. The event started out as the Rotterdam Deathfest, but from 2006 on, it became the Neurotic Deathfest. Each year the line-up becomes better. This is reflected in the amount of foreign visitors coming to Tilburg to be a part of the biggest indoor death metal festival in Europe. On behalf of Ghost Cult Friso van Daalen (FD) and Mitchell Scheerder (MS) were on the scene to report…Continue reading
