ALBUM REVIEW: Incandescence – Le Coeur De L’Homme

I guess it’s a sign of being in the business for too long, when you look at a band’s name and presentation and immediately have some ideas of what’s ahead. With Incandescence’s Le Coeur De L’Homme (Profound Lore) I had an inkling towards it being the work of a multi-instrumentalist working within the confines of blackened death metal. Well, I almost nailed it.  Le Coeur De L’Homme leans more into black metal and features Louis-Paul Gauvreau handling vocals while Philippe Boucher is the mastermind behind everything else. Continue reading

REVIEW: Beyond Creation – Fallujah –  Arkaik – and Equipoise: Live at The Sanctuary, Detroit MI

The bright blue paint job on The Sanctuary makes it the most inviting building on Cardiff Street. Nestled in the middle of Hamtramck, a pint-sized town in Detroit, The Sanctuary is actually one of the most inviting music venues in the whole city. The Canadian Death Metal act, Beyond Creation brought their proggy and technical goodness to Ham Town earlier this week. It was the second to last gig on a month-long tour with Fallujah, Arkaik, and Equipoise. The band has been promoting their most recent full-length album, Algorythm (Season of Mist) on this run and hearing it played in full made for a perfect Metal Monday. Continue reading

Beyond Creation – Algorythm

As Technical Death Metal begins its third decade as a subgenre, the stakes for success have never been higher. Legends like Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts, Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Obscura, Dying Fetus, Immolation and more continue to churn out incredible releases every few years and still slay. New bands, buoyed by modern technology, scale new heights of musical proficiency. They write brain-exploding songs all the time. Hell, there are guys and gals on YouTube just shredding all the time on originals, covers, and playthroughs. But the question we have is can anyone write a truly memorable song anymore? Abysmal Torment – The Misanthrope

In case you were caught unawares, the “tech” in the tech death sub-genre of metal means technical. It’s an important distinction to make since death metal can be many things, not all of it deserves the lofty label. The earliest purveyors of the style might have been extreme, and well accomplished at playing their instruments, but not living up to the name. Later bands definitely upped the ante on what could be accomplished and now we are talking about an umbrella of bands that could mean Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Death, Beyond Creation, Gorguts, Neuraxis, Obscura, Cryptopsy, and many more. Hailing from the small island nation of Malta, comes Abysmal Torment, who want you to know in no uncertain terms they can carry the weight. Their new album The Misanthrope (Willowtip) is a brutal exploration of the style in every track.Continue reading
