One of the most successful rock groups in Japanese history –  X Japan, led by Yoshiki – has released their first new single in eight years, “Angel”. Norwegian metal festival, Inferno, recently revealed the second raft of bands added to their 2024 lineup. Additionally, they have just announced At The Gates will be joining the fray. As in previous years, the bill, spread across several Oslo venues, comprises of classic acts and newcomers, largely from the realms of extreme metal.

ALBUM REVIEW: Signs Of The Swarm – Amongst The Low And Empty


 

There is no way the album title is meant to foreshadow what’s on the coming horizon. However, Amongst The Low And Empty (Century Media Records) accurately describes Signs Of The Swarm’s newest release. Lacking in ingenuity or inspiration, the deathcore purveyors recycle a small handful of techniques – over-exaggerated marble mouth, sparsely timed drum hits – to muster a record that has value as something intense and heavy, but decidedly not something ground-breaking by any means.

ALBUM REVIEW: Gateway – Galgeendod


 

Distortion and volume alone do not equate to heavy. Heaviness is the feeling these sounds invoke. Sonic alchemy can be oppressive, horrifying, depressing, creepy or somehow unsettling; Gateway finds themselves touching on all of these feelings on their new album Galgeendood (Transcending Obscurity Records). Belgium is not at the top of my list when it comes to places I might expect this kind of subterranean death doom to emerge from, but here we are. EP REVIEW: Dead Heat – Endless Torment


 

“Drinking beer, smoking marijuana, listening to Judas Priest…” stems from a shoddy news report detailing the Judas Priest lawsuit trial from 1990. But for those in the know, the sample from the said report was the awesome opening touch that Nails went with on the Among the Arches of Intolerance/In Pain single from 2015. If you don’t own the Decibel Magazine flexi, do yourself a favor and give it a listen on your preferred streaming platform. The same beer-swilling, reefer madness slogan would make perfect sense paired with another Oxnard, California standout in Dead Heat
