I’m not one for subgenres. I mean, I understand why they exist and how they appear to explain why Exodus sounds differently from Sleep all while still operating under the Heavy Metal umbrella, but I think we’re too preoccupied with the minutiae of the subgenres; we’re too busy defending the merits of our style against the perceived weaknesses of the others. That’s why it very refreshing to attempt to make sense of the sounds on Calligram’s Askesis (Basick). Continue reading

Tarja – From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)
The Venn diagram of people who like symphonic metal and people who like Christmas music is most certainly not a circle, but it is statistically probable that there is some kind of overlapping area in there. Is From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas) (earMUSIC) the perfect album for this niche crowd? NO.Continue reading

Butcher Babies – Lilith
The likelihood is, if you have already experienced Butcher Babies in any capacity, you have probably already made up your opinion of them. Always receiving a very mixed response since they made headlines due to their stage attire, critically they have either been hugely celebrated or completely panned. Regardless of opinion, Butcher Babies generate a strong reaction whatever they do, and therefore are in that sense an exciting presence. Musically, they are simply far less interesting, and third album Lilith (Century Media) is a continuation of that trend.Continue reading
Death Toll 80K – Step Down
I just listened to Death Toll 80K’s new album and overall second full length, Step Down (Svart Records) and my first instinct was to search the floor for my glasses and any missing teeth. Not to worry, gentle reader, my teeth are still firmly attached, and no physical harm has been visited upon my Ray-Ban’s, but Step Down is bound to leave some scars on my psyche. Continue reading

The Body And Full Of Hell – Ascending A Mountain Of Heavy Light
The Body and Full Of Hell are no strangers to collaborations or to each other, as both acts have teamed up in the past together and individually with some of the undergrounds best bands (Thou, Code Orange, Krieg etc). One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache (Neurot) was an assault on the senses, and you’d expect nothing less from both bands, but with Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light (Thrill Seeker) they look to push the boundaries of what qualifies as music even further.Continue reading
Cavalera Conspiracy – Psychosis
Where do I fucking start with Psychosis (Napalm) the new album from Cavalera Conspiracy and hands down, cards on table and ear holes suitably blasted away possibly the best thing either brother has done since Roots (Roadrunner)? Not to demean the album in any way, but it feels like the band has reached back into their collective back catalogues and meshed all of their sounds and ideas together to create a “Greatest Moments Of…..” and package them inside brand new songs.Continue reading
Nullingroots – Into The Grey
In recent years there has been a boom within the Black Metal scene of bands embracing a more melodic, often delicate and ambient side to the genre. Where bands such as the likes of Alcest and Agalloch (although vastly different, they share some ground in Black Metal’s evolution in recent times) adopted more ambiance and earthy atmospheres were surprising and evolutionary, nowadays such acts are much more commonplace, and thus the cream of the crop becomes harder to stand out. Continue reading
Game Over – Claiming Supremacy
Formed in 2008 in Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italian Thrashers Game Over are another act, who along with the likes of Bonded By Blood, Evil Invaders, Toxic Waltz, Merciless Death, and the irritatingly misspelt Fabulous Desaster, wear their influences on their sleeve by choosing a name based on a classic Thrash album or song.Continue reading
