CONCERT REVIEW: High on Fire – Spirit Adrift – Dysrhythmia: Live at Le Poisson Rouge

In certain circles, some might say “so goes Matt Pike, so goes the entire metal scene.” As the co-founder of two of the most iconic bands of the last two generations of die-hard metal fans, Pike’s mighty riffs laid down with SLEEP and later with High on Fire has led him from the underground to mainstream love from critics and fans alike. With his debut book about to drop, and a solo album tentatively due in 2022, Pike is on a roll and a High on Fire show, playing their first concerts in a few years now, is a necessary ritual for fans.

Beginning with the 1998 album ‘The Art Of Self Defense’, and through to 2018’s ‘Electric Messiah’, each chapter of Head on A Pike features Matt’s distinctive lyrics flanked by one-of-a-kind artistic interpretations — specifically inspired by each album — straight from the minds and hearts of an incredible cast of illustrators, tattooers, print makers and painters that Pike has trusted since the beginning to depict his unique musical vision. Head On A Pike: The Illustrated Lyrics of Matt Pike is scheduled for worldwide release in hardcover and e-book, and the trade edition will retail for $20. Signed hardcovers and signed limited edition bundles are available at the link below.

Ripple Music’s RippleFest Cologne Books Savanah, Aptera, Fire Down Below, Astral Kompakt, Stonebirds, and Vug

Desertfest NYC Returns in 2022

After their smasdhing debut, Desertfest NYC returns to New York City for three days of stoner doom bands, plus a pre-party at St. Vitus Bar. The former main venue of The Well has closed during the pandemic and the new venue will be The Knockdown Center. The fest takes place from May 13th – May 15th 2022, and band reveals and ticket on sales are coming this November.

ALBUM REVIEW: Lavaborne – Black Winged Gods

The last few years have been very good for Trad Metal bands and their fans. Be it the maturing of the old school heavy metallers, or the young hipstery bizarro mustachio, vest metal crew that have formed a new age fanbase, it’s been heartwarming to see a horde of fans support so many worthy bands of late. One that has gotten on my radar the last few years is Lavaborne; mid-western warriors who eschew the vanilla tropes of the style in favor of originality, top songcraft, and true Trad reverence.

Crystal Spiders – Morieris

With the second Crystal Spiders album, Morieris (Ripple Music), coming out just a year after Molt, it’s fair to say that it picks up where its predecessor left off. The guitar has a more noticeable presence courtesy of producer Mike Dean playing a more hands on role in the proceedings, but the songs remain primarily driven by Brenna Leath’s thumping bass and attitude-filled howls along with Tradd Yancey’s muscular drumming.
