ALBUM REVIEW: Grumpster – Grumpster

Contrary to popular belief, Pop Punk and Emo are far from dead and buried. There are tons of true-school cool pocket scenes all over with great bands and fans supporting the hell out of them. One of best bands that have come from the underground recently to earn props is Grumpster from Oakland. Always a legendary place for Punk (thank you East Bay scene, 924 Gilman Street), but has had more than a few killer bands of late too. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Billy Talent – Crisis of Faith

If a change is as good as a rest, is a rest as good as a change? It has been over five years since the undistinguished Afraid of Heights (Warner Music) and over two years since the first single from this album, ‘Forgiveness I + II’. While delays could be justifiable and chalked up to the pandemic, the question is, on their sixth album and first for Spinefarm, are Canadian punk troupe Billy Talent facing their own Crisis of Faith and confidence?

Watch Weezer Parody Themselves In Their Video For “Africa” Featuring Weird Al

Weezer is having a big year with their awesome cover of Toto’s 1980s classic ‘Africa’, which has become a cultural phenomenon. Now in a stroke of meta-levels of genius, watch the band as they parody their own first video ever, 1994s ‘The Sweater Song’, in the video for ‘Africa’. The clip, which is at times a shot for shot remake of the ‘The Sweater Song’ clip, also features Weird Al, as frontman Rivers Cuomo from that video, rocking his customary accordion. Supergenius – Supertired

Belgian rockers Supergenius’s début album Supertired (Hypertension/9000 Records) is awash with Nineties influences, it is chunky melodic rock with a strong vein of Indie and pop-Punk running through it. ‘Charmer’ has a nice, whistleable chorus to add to its strong, radio friendly Foo Fighters vibe. They also share the fuzzy guitar tone and slight sense of melancholy of Weezer, the heavy rhythms of ‘Know Your Knots’ demonstrates this. Edward Godby’s everyman vocal style shares more than a passing resemblance to Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of aforementioned sweater pulling rockers.Continue reading

laoki

To celebrate the release of Neon Future II, Aoki, in conjunction with Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles, has announced LAoki, a free concert powered by Scion to thank his fans and the city he loves, happening on Saturday, May 16 in the heart of downtown. This legendary event will take place per a street closure on Broadway between 4rd and 6th Streets, allowing fans the opportunity to experience a once in a life time concert by Aoki on release week of Neon Future II , set against the backdrop of the downtown Los Angeles skyline. Tickets can be obtained today by signing up for information regarding the Mayor’s Volunteer Corps at http://smarturl.it/LAokiShow.

Says Aoki, a native Angeleno,

“My whole career was built in Los Angeles, so it only made sense to do the biggest show of my life on the streets of downtown, just blocks from my label Dim Mak’s homebase. Making it a free show is my thank you to the city that’s given me so much, but I also felt it was important to encourage others to give back as well. To get a ticket, all you have to do is sign up for more information on Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Volunteer Corps. Hopefully my fans will learn about something they can do to help build a better city. Los Angeles is my heart. I love this city.”
