ALBUM REVIEW: Pestilence Hex – The Ashen Abhorrence

The Ashen Abhorrence (Debemur Morti Productions) is the debut album from Finnish duo Pestilence Hex, who delivers a full-on blast of heavily old-school Norwegian-influenced black metal. The project brings together vocalist M.Malignant (Corpsessed / Tyranny) and multi-instrumentalist L.Oathe (Desolate Shrine / Convocation) two musicians better known in death/doom circles, but who certainly appear to also know exactly what they’re doing when it comes to the black stuff.

CONCERT REVIEW: Cradle of Filth – Frayle Live at The Machine Shop

Flint, Michigan, might be known for the crime, cars, and crisis. Yet this down-and-out town has more to offer than that. Music fans know it best for being home to The Machine Shop. This nationally acclaimed music venue has been hosting, supporting, and celebrating bands for twenty years. This special concert lounge has gained its reputation because of their genuine love of live music and doting on its patrons. They bring to mid-Michigan audiences an enthusiasm and care most venues don’t bother with anymore. It was a bright, spring evening last weekend when a group of goth kids formed a line outside this beloved hall’s doors. They were exposed to more sunlight than what they were probably used to, but it was worth it because the Symphonic Black Metal Titans, Cradle of filth, were in town.  Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Christian Death – Evil Becomes Rule

When it comes to acrimonious splits within bands, some music fans have long memories. Tending to side with one party over the other, many loyal devotees can either be unwilling or simply unable to let go of the past no matter how much water has passed under the bridge in the meantime. The faint hope of some future reconciliation usually remains among the embittered faithful but when death becomes part of the story a grudge often turns into something unforgivable and can last a lifetime.

ALBUM REVIEW: Dark Funeral – We Are The Apocalypse

Not exactly the most prolific of bands, Swedish black metal act Dark Funeral have been around for virtually three decades but their latest album We Are the Apocalypse (Century Media) is only their seventh full-length studio release in that time. With more former members than overall releases, it’s easy to see why there has been so much inconsistency over the years. The only remaining original member is guitarist Jan Michael Svanberg (aka Lord Ahriman).

ALBUM REVIEW: Venom Prison – Erebos

If there’s a silver lining thus far into 2022 it’s that at least we don’t have to wait too long for some good old-fashioned spine-busting metal. We’re barely out of January and we already have fresh releases from the likes of Enterprise Earth, Shadow of Intent and Fit for an Autopsy. Yes, I am aware that Omicron is all the rage back home and some folks are still under lockdown but believe me new riffs and blast beats go a long way in lifting one’s spirits.

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: Sarah Jezebel Deva – “A Sign of the Sublime (Redux)”

Legendary Symphonic Metal vocalist Sarah Jezebel Deva (Torn Between Two Worlds, Mortiis) has released a brand new single, a reimagining of the her song “A Sign of the Sublime (Redux)” from her debut solo album of the same name in 2010. Although the album is loved by fans, Sarah and her peers soured on the finished product, much to their dismay. She has gathered some amazing comrades (including members of Angtoria, ex-Cradle of Filth, Mayhem) to recreate the track such as Ken Newman – guitars, Dan Abela – guitars, drums, mixing and mastering, Lindsay Schoolcraft – Keys and orchestration, Dave Pybus – Bass and Charles E A Hedger/Ghul – chipping in a guitar solo! Stream and pre-order the track right now at the link below. Continue reading
