ALBUM REVIEW: Billy Howerdel – What Normal Was
Billy Howerdel is best known as the songwriter and guitarist for A Perfect Circle, the band he created with his good friend James Maynard Keenan (Tool / Puscifer) after they met when Tool were supporting Fishbone for whom Howerdel was a guitar tech in the early nineties, before sharing a house together in the Hollywood Hills. Howerdel would work on his early material while also engineering for the likes of David Bowie, Guns n’ Roses, and Nine Inch Nails.
ALBUM REVIEW: Fracture Type – Pickaxe
On the right night, if you walk out from North Quincy Station, past the “brutalist McDonalds,” following the funk towards Wollaston Beach, you might come across a house that seems to be pulsing. On a night like that, if you fight your way through the mass of burly beards, skateboarders, and pitbulls and take a sonic blast to the face, you’ll find yourself in Ugly Robot Studios, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to a front-row performance of Fracture Type. ALBUM REVIEW: Deftones – White Pony – Black Stallion
Deftones had a banner year in 2020, dropping their impeccable Ohms (Reprise Records, review here) and celebrating the 20th anniversary of arguably their best album, White Pony. Unbeknownst to fans, and music journos, there is an entire secret history of White Pony the band revealed this year. For years we had been hearing that the band was interested in a remix album, either of an entire past release or perhaps a new album. It turns out, the band always intended White Pony to have a companion album or EP of remixes, called Black Stallion. Among the fanbase, this potential release lived in the lore of their minds, as much or more than the Eros sessions we may, or may not ever see the light of day (and we understand why guys). Now the band has capped off their year with the fleshed out and realized Black Stallion release (also Reprise).

Rock supergroup Gone Is Gone has shared a new video for their latest single “Death of a Dream” from the upcoming If Everything Happens for A Reason…Then Nothing Really Matters at All via the Clouds Hill label on December 4th. The video for, “Death of a Dream” was created by longtime collaborator Freangel Pacheco who has worked with the band on the socially distanced videos for the album during the pandemic and features additional footage by Troy Sanders capturing shots of him in the ‘dream-like’ video. The band includes Sanders (Mastodon) Tony Hajjar (At The Drive-In), Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age) and Mike Zarin (Sencit Music).
LIVESTREAM REVIEW: Puscifer – Existential Reckoning – Live at The Arcosanti
Theatrical Rock troupe Puscifer never does anything small and never has. Everything they do feels like an event level thing in an “it’s all happening” way. In the early days of the band, it was singles and EP’s before their debut album. Then it was a Paul Frank clothing drop or a few shows. Now, even in these trying times choking the music industry, the band finds creative ways to top themselves. They just released their new album, Existential Reckoning (read our review here) and for Halloween, they shared a visually striking, possibly insane, and high-quality multi-media livestream performance, Existential Reckoning – Live at The Arcosanti in the Arizona desert.
Maynard James Keenan To Open New Wine Tasting Bar In Scottsdale Arizona
While most fans of Tool, a perfect circle, and Puscifer singer Maynard James Keenan complain about their first world problems like waiting for a new Tool album, Keenan’s real long time passion is wine. Through his brand Caduceus Cellars and his stake in Merkin Vineyards, he has brought an old world vintners’ sensibility, to the arid climes of Arizona for over a decade. According to Arizona Central and the Republic newspaper, that sensibility is coming to a new tasting store in Scottsdale Arizona. As one of the founding members of a new Arizona winemakers’ alliance, Keenan will help open a tasting shop in Old Town Scottsdale, about 2 hours south of Jerome, where Keenan lives, has his vineyard, and also a Puscifer Store. Merkin Vineyards Old Town location will be singer’s first tasting room in metro Phoenix — will take over the space that most recently housed Counter-Intuitive cocktail bar. Those searching for Arizona wine already can find a handful of tasting rooms in Old Town Scottsdale. But this spring, one of the state’s most famous winemakers will put down roots in the popular dining district. Keenan’s wine is made in the North of the state and distinctively different. The store has a tentative March open date planned. Kennan’s wines can be bought and shipped in the USA to states that allow wine sales, and are often found at concerts and festivals he performs at.
