A charity compilation aimed at donating 100% of proceeds to the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAH: https://www.abortionfunds.org) and the Yellowhammer Fund (https://www.yellowhammerfund.org) has been a big success in just the first 48 hours. Riffs for Reproductive Justice is 33-track set includes artists from Hether Fortune, Closet Witch, Vile Creature, Sunrot, Dawn Ray’d and Racetraitor, Twin Temple, Svalbard, and special tracks include Cliterati’s cover of L7’s ‘Fast and Frightening,’ Fucked and Bound’s cover of Sonic Youth’s ‘Kool Thang’ and Thou’s cover of the Leadbelly classic, ‘In the Pines’, which they teased on social media earlier in the week. Organized by Activist and metal journalist Kim Kelly (ex-Noisey, Rolling Stone) who recently launched the Black Flags Over Brooklyn anti-facist music festival in Brooklyn, sees many of these acts who participated in the fest. Donation receipts will be posted in a Dropbox folder which will be shared with the bands and with anyone who requests access. Their new single ‘Satan’s A Woman’ debuted today via Revolver and continues to echo the band’s unmatched voice against the elements of misogyny, racism, homophobia, and discrimination in all forms. Roadburn, now in its 20th year, is a fest I had promised I would start going to many, many years ago but for one reason or another never did. This year I went and although it is like other music fests in some ways, I can say that it is equally unlike other fests in many other ways. Many of my personal experiences will not be akin to a standard festival goer due to the nature of what I do obviously but if you bear with me here I can explain some things that the average person should expect when and if they decide to go is on their list of priorities. Today is the day! After the pre-fest party last night, the sold-out Roadburn 2019 kicks off today, and for the next four days in Tilburg, Netherlands will smash you a full slate of bands. Major artists like Sleep, At The Gates, Thou, Cave In, Old Man Gloom, Daughters, Myrkur and more will perform in intimate settings you won’t see at any other festival. The fest even added last minute local artists Doodswens (Dutch for Deathwish), a two-piece black metal group that we’ll have our ears peeled for.
