The Punk Rock MBA Examines “What Killed Death Metal?”

Cannibal Corpse, by Evil Robb Photography

If you don’t follow The Punk Rock MBA, the YouTube channel run by music and marketing expert Finn McKenty, you are missing out! We are huge fans of his! His videos explore all of your favorite genres of music, their rise and sometimes fall. He uses the “what killed____” tag to get people interested, but clearly, he means in a commercial cultural way, not the death or a genre, as in the case of death metal. He discusses the main bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Bolt Thrower, Mortician, Incantation, and Suffocation, Cynic, Suffocation, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding, Entombed, Dismember, the cultural forces that led to its popularity (Ace Venture Pet Detective and Beavis and Butthead) and more! Maryland Deathfest 2018 – Baltimore Maryland

For a metal fan, especially an underground metal fan with a cultured taste, Maryland Deathfest is the holy grail of music festivals. They are metal fans, so they understand metal fans. It has grown by leaps and bounds like a little cottage industry with California Deathfest, Quebec Deathfest, Netherlands Deathfest, Days of Darkness and more to come I’m sure. As I attended my first ever full weekend, I saw incredible bands on my bucket list, met a lot of great people from all over the world, hung out with friends and basically had more fun than I could imagine. It was basically summer camp for die-hard metal fans. No judgments, no fights, no fake kung fu in the mosh pit, just all awesomeness 24/7. Fun for families and even dogs. Incantation – Profane Nexus

How to word this? Profane Nexus (Relapse Records), the tenth studio album from New York death metal institution, Incantation is not bad. Good even. Longtime followers need not concern, there is enough Death and Doom to go around on Profane Nexus, but I just feel like more could’ve been left out on the field this time around. Continue reading
