CONCERT REVIEW: Rotting Christ – Borknagar – Abigail Williams and More Live at Saint Vitus Bar
Finally! After three years the Devastation on the Nation Tour blazes through New York City! … with two, back-to-back, scorching hot shows!
I was lucky enough to catch the Saturday Matinee, in true New York fashion. I opted for the 430 PM show in an effort to save my aging infrastructure from a night of TOTAL obliteration.
CONCERT REVIEW: Cradle of Filth – Frayle Live at The Machine Shop
Flint, Michigan, might be known for the crime, cars, and crisis. Yet this down-and-out town has more to offer than that. Music fans know it best for being home to The Machine Shop. This nationally acclaimed music venue has been hosting, supporting, and celebrating bands for twenty years. This special concert lounge has gained its reputation because of their genuine love of live music and doting on its patrons. They bring to mid-Michigan audiences an enthusiasm and care most venues don’t bother with anymore. It was a bright, spring evening last weekend when a group of goth kids formed a line outside this beloved hall’s doors. They were exposed to more sunlight than what they were probably used to, but it was worth it because the Symphonic Black Metal Titans, Cradle of filth, were in town. Continue reading
CONCERT REVIEW: Devin Townsend (Acoustic) – Cambridge Junction
You can tell it’s not going to be a normal gig from the off, as Devin Townsend spends the first few minutes tuning and chatting away, completely at ease, as if the audience was an old friend and he was sat in his living room. As he pings and strums away, musing about whether he likes his upcoming new album Lightworks or not (he decides he does, he thinks it sounds healthy, and good… he thinks, yes definitely good), he sets the tone for a gig that is genuinely intimate – not because it takes place in a small venue, but because Devin is completely natural and wholly authentic throughout. CONCERT REVIEW: Insomnium – Conjurer UK: Live at Manchester Academy 3
I think it goes without saying at this point that Finish melodeath collective Insomnium is one of the most respected and consistent names in their genre. While Scandinavia is no stranger to exports of high-quality melodic death metal, many of the genre’s biggest names like In Flames and Children of Bodom have either compromised their distinctive sound in favour of more accessible elements, or in some cases, no longer exist. Insomnium however, has continued to fine-tune the gloomy atmosphere they first presented almost two decades ago in 2002’s In The Halls of Awaiting. Now, boasting a total of eight melancholic yet undeniably gorgeous releases under their belt, the band has done the UK and Ireland the honour of a nationwide tour in support of their latest opus, Heart Like a Grave (Century Media). An album that is less sprawling and proggy than Winter’s Gate (Century Media), but is an equally if not more epic and melodic record, packed with more guitar leads and solos than anything they have released to date. Certainly, it is the kind of material that you would expect to excel in the live environment, and so on a bleak Monday night in winter, I ventured out to Manchester Academy 3 for a necessary dose of metalised depression.Continue reading
