On The Road… with Clutch and Corrosion Of Conformity

clutch-coc-shrine-admat

What year is it again? A new Star Wars movie is about two months away, Iron Maiden has a brand new album out that rules, The Muppet Show has new episodes on TV each week and other amazingness is happening. Somebody pinch me! Or don’t, because I don’t want to wake up if this is a dream. And for the kicker, Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity, frequent touring partners for the last 25 years are out on the road together once again. Playing blistering sets each night for droves of fans, neither band competes with the other. Instead they live in their own bubbles of genre defining greatness. C.O.C., now rejoined by Pepper Keenan (Down), are rejuvenated by going down memory lane for a set consisting of songs from classic 90s albums such as Deliverance and Wiseblood (both Columbia). Although they occasionally toss in an 80s crossover classic, one hopes the band hasn’t abandoned its fruitful “COC trio” work they have been doing the last few years completely. Writing for a new COC album is ongoing and a release is expected sometime in 2016. In the meantime Clutch is just crushing on the strength of their bold new album Psychic Warfare (Weathermaker). Led by the indomitable Neil Fallon, the band has mined this new album heavily live, as well as the classics that have made Clutch one of the premier American heavy rock bands going. Captured tonight by Evil Robb Photography at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in New Hampshire, you have one of the strongest bills of no compromise rock and metal heard anywhere this fall.

On The Road… with Superjoint

superjoint

Superjoint, the band risen from the ashes of 90s hardcore metal band Superjoint Ritual is currently on the road opening for Danzig’s “Blackest of the Black Tour”, along with Veil of Maya, Prong, and Witch Mountain. Superjoint was conceived of and is led by Philip Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals), Jimmy Bower (Down, EyeHateGod) and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver) and came to form a supergroup 15 years ago. They are currently backed by Anselmo accolytes José Manuel Gonzalez Jr. on drums (Warbeast, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals) and Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Wovenhand, 16 Horsepower), on bass. In addition to tearing it up on the Danzig tour the band is heading toward the finish line of Phil’s 3rd annual Housecore Horror Festival. On the first night of the full tour at The Marquee in Tempe, Superjoint seemed energized from coming back and the reaction of crowd was vocal in their support. Unlike other bands trying hard to be clean and all prettied up, Superjoint is 100% no bullshit. Just ugly music for brutal music fans, who don’t need their riffs white-washed with interludes or overlong jams. The only breakdown you will hear is an emotional one, collectively from the crowd when all is said and done. Thanks to Melina Dellamarggio of Melina D Photography for being on point in the photo pit on this night.

Superjoint – King Parrot – Child Bite – Fulgora: Live at The Chance

superjointittakesgutstour

It’s been awhile, ten years actually since the band formerly known as Superjoint Ritual has graced New York with a show. Now known simply as Superjoint and armed with a new rhythm section, Kevin Bond, Jimmy Bower and Phil Anselmo come a crushin’.

In tow on the “It Takes Guts Tour”, was Fulgora from Missouri who features past and present members of Misery Index. Up next was Detroit Michigan’s Child Bite, who bring their experimental punk metal mesh to the hungry crowd. Following their eclectic set was Australia’s new golden boys King Parrot. Vocalist Matt Young and crew just drenched the on lookers with water and sweat. A mystery masked man joined them during their “hit” song ‘Shit on the Liver’. It may or may not have been the proprietor of Housecore Records under the cowl!

Phil and company were on fire, sounding like no time has passed since 2003. Everyone was on point, new bassist Stephen Taylor and drummer Joey Gonzalez of Phil’s solo band, The Illegals fit seamlessly into the SJR sound. Playing a hefty 17 songs from their two albums. Opening with ‘The Alcoholik’, many tunes turned into sing-a-longs. They were so good I ended up in the pit moshing after I put the camera away. The much missed Kevin Bond was treated to an intro and chant before ‘It Takes Guts’. Phil joked about their bus not having air conditioning and did an improv mini-song about it. Hearing these songs live after so many years felt like a time warp. Even though I didn’t hear ‘Dress Like A Target’, a blast was had by all. Thankfully these songs are timeless and it was easy to get lost in the music. Here’s to more Superjoint tours and music in the future.

King Hitter – King Hitter

king hitter ep 2015

If there is ever a time I get to go on a great road trip (outside of Maryland Deathfest this year) I will be certainly cranking albums like King Hitter’s self titled debut EP. For those not familiar, King Hitter consists of Karl Agell on vocals (Corrosion of Conformity/COC BLIND/Leadfoot), Scott Little on guitar (Leadfoot), Mike Brown also on guitar (Cutterhead), Jon Chambliss sitting behind the set (S.L.A.M.), and Chuck Manning keeping up the low end on bass (S.L.A.M.). Overall, I liked the groovy, southern personality this group brings on their first EP. Karl’s vocals may not be the harsh vocals the heavy metal culture is accustomed to nowadays, but I find them to be fitting. Even if this EP only has five tracks on it, each one has its own feel and vibe which kept me interested throughout.

The first track, properly entitled ‘King Hitter’, is a great sample of what these guys have to offer. A great southern, bluesy feel while still keeping it groovy. Karl’s vocal hooks are also very catchy and listener’s will catch themselves head banging for sure. ‘Drone Again’ and ‘Feel No Pain’ increase the ante by getting a little heavier on the guitars and, at times, had sections of instrumentals that sounded like a punk rock band. ‘Suicide (is the Retirement Plan)’ wins the award for most clever song title of the month by a landslide as we hit the second half of the album. However, even if this EP is coming to an end, King Hitter does not wind down at all. Arguably one of the heaviest guitar riffs on the album comes in the verse of this song. Lastly, we have the most appropriate song title to end any album, ‘The End.’ The mood of this song swings more than pendulum which I though adds to the insanity of all endings really. Halfway through the track we get the most bluesy guitar solo I may have ever heard from a heavy metal band.

Overall I did enjoy this EP and I look forward to see what else King Hitter has to offer. For fans of bands like Corrosion of Conformity, Down, and even Volbeat, I feel you should check these guys out. Even if none of the aforementioned bands interest you, check out King Hitter.

My Favorite Concert Memory – Jimmy Bower

The first concert I ever went to was the Rolling Stones Tattoo You tour. My dad worked at CBS, so we were in the press box. It was 1980, so I was about 12 years old. There was this chick in the press box next to me and she kept saying to me “I’m on acid! I’m on acid!” So she was tripping on acid really bad and my dad had to ask her to leave me alone. (laughs) My second show ever was Heart and Kansas. I remember me and my sister were behind the stage watching from there, and Ann Wilson walked out on stage. And she and looked up at me and my sister, saw us and she gave us a thumbs up. It was really cool that she saw us as fans, so young. It really meant a lot to me for her to do that, that she was cool enough to shoot a thumbs up over at me. And this really set the bar for how I have treated fans the rest of my life in my career.”
