FESTIVAL REVIEW: Sonic Temple Art and Music Festival, Live at Crew Stadium Part 1

Sonic Temple Art And Music Festival returned to Columbus, Ohio for the first time after taking three gap years. 

Let’s begin with a little context. The inaugural instance of Sonic Temple was in 2019. Leading up to the event, festival promoter Danny Wimmer Presents (DWP) had discontinued an arrangement with AEG Presents to jointly produce Rock On The Range, the festival in Columbus, Ohio that Sonic Temple replaced. So, Sonic Temple needed to be different enough from Rock On The Range to dispel any raised eyebrows about the move. DWP also broke off ties at about the same time with AEG for their jointly created Carolina Rebellion festival and started a new one in its place called Epicenter. While those moves might have been sound business decisions, it still turned out to be a tough year for DWP festivals.

The festivities kick off with the Rocklahoma campgrounds opening on Sunday, August 27 and music performances get underway at the official Rocklahoma pre-party on Thursday, August 31. Welsh rockers Those Damn Crows stock has risen a lot since their 2018 debut album Murder and the Motive, having toured with Skindred, Funeral For A Friend, and Monster Magnet, graced the stage of Download, Hard Rock Hell, Planet Rockstock, and Ramblin’ Man festivals and hitting 14th in the UK charts with their second album Point of No Return. Their third full-length Inhale/Exhale, on Earache Records, continues their rise with another slab of consummately made and slickly produced Hard Rock.

Attempting to improve on 2014’s The Satanist (review here) was always going to be a near impossible task but with I Loved You At Your Darkest (review here), Polish blackened death metal act Behemoth very nearly succeeded. A robust and forward-thinking follow-up held in high regard by many, the only thing which appeared to hold it back for some was the enormous shadow cast by its predecessor.

Voragos: Destination Lunasea Beach has announced Mudvayne, Atreyu, Crown The Empire, and Afterlife  to the lineup for the private island festival and 5-day rock cruise coming in early 2022. The recently reunited Mudvayne (who continues to partner with Danny Wimmer Presents for their first live performances after a 12-year hiatus), Atreyu, Crown The Empire and Afterlife. Mudvayne will play both on board and at Lunasea Beach and will replace Chevelle who regrettably have to cancel their VORAGOS Lunasea Beach appearance due to a conflict with their upcoming touring schedule. All other previously announced acts will be appearing, including Rob Zombie, Mastodon. and more.
