EP REVIEW: No Cure – I Hope I Die Here

Alabama is a state with a very well-known identity and stereotype, often ascribed as being synonymous with the uneducated, right-wing conservative types. It is aspirational that the hardcore troup, No Cure, want to change that for the better. All bands have gotta start somewhere, and with a list of features, your arm’s length, No Cure certainly are reaching high with their brand new EP I Hope I Die Here (SharpTone Records).

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Max Cavalera Dynasty Show ft. Soulfly – Nailbomb – Incite – Go Ahead and Die – Healing Magic – Jade Helm and More Live at The Marquee Theater

Nailbomb. NAILBOMB. It feels hard to believe that I got to see Nailbomb’s first show since 1995, but here we are. Max Cavalera is in at least six bands, has worked with at least a dozen more, and performed with three of those during the first-ever Max Cavalera Dynasty Show (MCDS) – Soulfly, Nailbomb, and Go Ahead and Die (GAAD). Max’s son, Igor, almost performed in three bands that night (Nailbomb, GAAD, Healing Magic), and Igor’s girlfriend Jackie Cruz performed in both GAAD and Jade Helm. Max’s other son, Richie, is the frontman for Incite, who also played. So, six Cavalera Dynasty bands, with four local bands opening the show – Six Million Dead, Shadow Guilt, Ocean Harvest, and Zherra.

Let’s get right into things.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Dark Sky Burial – V.I.T.R.I.O.L.

Had I been told four or five years ago that the spirit of psyche-exploring, experimental Electro/Industrial duo Coil would be alive and flourishing in the hands of Napalm Death’s bass player, I would have been … surprised. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Electric Wizard – Black Magic Rituals and Perversions, Vol. 1

In 2024, Electric Wizard returns with their first album in seven years, Black Magic Rituals and Perversions, Vol. 1 (Spinefarm Records), a live album. Returning with a live album is one thing but this isn’t your ordinary live album. Usually, when one thinks of live albums, you may think of hearing bombastic stage sounds and roaring crowds, but Electric Wizard chose to record to an audience of each other and to the fans with the idea that people would get to hear what a band, trapped in isolation with the thought of possibly never playing again. The result of this album is a crushing presentation of songs that are even more raw, angry, and fist-clenching than before.  Continue reading

CONCERT REVIEW: Solstafir – Oranssi Pazuzu – Hamferð Live at Manchester Club Academy

“The Nordic Descent” tour must be carrying in its wake a touch of that famous Nordic climate as the UK is treated to its one light dusting of snow for the year. And of course as is tradition, once the first flakes touch ground all roads are rendered seemingly unusable which means our journey to the venue is inevitably delayed, throw in some minor confusion with passes on the door and we are unfortunately only able to catch the tail end of tonight’s opening act.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Mörk Gryning – Fasornas Tid

One of the foremost names in Swedish Black Metal, Stockholm’s Mörk Gryning is back with their seventh full-length studio release, the second since the band’s reactivation in 2016. Founded by multi-instrumentalists Goth Gorgon (aka Jonas Berndt) and Draakh Kimera (aka Peter Nagy-Eklöf) back in 1993, Gorgon has been at the heart of every record since the very beginning with Kimera only absent for 2005’s self-titled, seemingly swansong release.Continue reading
