Roky Erickson, Psychedelic Rock Legend, Dies at Age 71

Sad news today as Roky Erickson, who build a career as a psychedelic rock founding father has died. He was 71 years old. No cause of death has been revealed at this time. A beloved artist by popular and underground acts, Roky first came to attention with seminal 1960s rock band 13th Floor Elevators. Erickson and the band coined the phrase psychedelic rock with the group and had a brief but impactful four years as a band. The bands’ trajectory was slowed down by Erickson’s issues with mental illness and depression. While he sought help, he was systematically abused in the system for years, which impeded his career further. But artists ranging from The Flaming Lips, Dave Grohl, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spiritualized, Primal Scream, ZZ Top, Big Brother and the Holding CompanyMy Bloody Valentine, Ghost, The Black Angels, Ween, Mazzy Starr, The Verve, and more touted him and 13th Floor Elevators for years in song and in the press as a heavy influence. Ghost’s 2013 cover of ‘If You Have Ghosts’ has almost five million plays on YouTube. The 2007 documentary You’re Going to Miss Me’ led to renewed interest in his career. We send our condolences out to Roky’s family, friends, and fans at this time. Continue reading

Druids – Monument

When Iowan trio Druids‘ EP Spirit Compass (Self-release) hit my ears sixteen months ago, I was staggered by the apparent ease with which the bandmelded the darkness of Sabbath and the violence of Mastodon with the joyous, Summery Grunge of Blind Melon. It made for a heady mix and new offering Monument (The Company) promises the same excitement amid a paradoxically heavy flexibility.Continue reading

The Sword – Used Future

Remember The Sword? The Austin, Texas group’s 2006 debut Age of Winters (Kemado) was a perfect blend of Black Sabbath and Sleep with a hint of Mastodon’s relentless drive. As one of, if the not the outright best debut albums that year, it gained widespread acclaim and sold an impressive 80,000 records. The follow-up, Gods of the Earth, was another slice of the same pie and saw the band bag a tour with Metallica. Continue reading

Van Halen’s Debut Album Turns 40 Years Old

Born from the Hollywood glam scene in the 1970s, the best classic rock musicianship in history, and a nod to punk rock independence, Van Halen burst on the scene and changed the face of music overnight. It may have been a foregone conclusion to those that saw them at the time that they would “make it”. However, once the album became a runaway hit, it was the template for the band’s entire career, and the impetus for the next few generations of rock and metal bands as well. Continue reading

After a gap of six years, legendary shock rocker Alice Cooper is back once again to give today’s youngsters a gentle, but purposeful reminder of how it’s done. At the age of 69, just a few months shy of joining the ranks of the septuagenarians, Alice is clearly in no mood to relax Continue reading

Scattered Hamlet – Swamp Rebel Machine

Much of the time music comes across the desk here at Ghost Cult HQ that is very pretentious, over-wrought and generally trying too hard to fit in with a scene or a sub-genre. A lot of the music business is actually geared that way, to drive bands to conform and cling hard to that approach in an attempt to get a foothold in the ears of fans. Then there’s Scattered Hamlet: no frills rock and metal with a simple approach to kick ass much ass, take names, and just have as much fun as possible. These are the kinds of albums we only hear a few times per year, but always appreciate as reviewers. Continue reading
