Nine Inch Nails – Not The Actual Events

One thing about Trent Reznor, he never seems to get complacent. Part of that is the artist inside of him won’t allow atrophy of his creative muscles very long. The strength of his need to keep growing forward and evolving, Reznor continues an over decade long hot-streak of new and varied output either as a solo artist, entrepreneur, film composer, visual artist, fashion designer, his other band projects such as How To Destroy Angels and of course with Nine Inch Nails.

Exclusive Song Stream: Julie And The Wolf – Devil Is The Man

JtW Ablaze Artwork

Ghost Cult Magazine is proud to present the new single from mysterious ambient post-rock duo Julie And The Wolf. You can stream their track ‘Devil Is The Man’ at this link or below:

‘Devil Is the Man’ comes from Julie And The Wolf’s forthcoming début album Ablaze, releasing on October 30th from the Audiogram label. Imagine Nine Inch Nails’s Ghost EP, put through a filter of bands like Anathema and the mellower moments of ISIS and you begin to understand the framework of Julie And The Wolf’s mindset. Julie’s hypnotic, vulnerable piano lays the foundation for vocalist Wolf Merzbacher’s heart breaking vocals and lyrics. The meshing of the two talents is breathtaking.

Trent Reznor And David Fincher Are Making Fight Club The Musical

fight_club_ver4

Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and award-winning film director David Fincher are working on a “rock opera” Broadway Musical version of Fincher’s 1999 cult movie classic Fight Club. The project was confirmed last weekend by Fight Club book author Chuck Palahniuk during a panel at San Diego Comic Con. Notable Broadway and film director Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark) is said to be attached as well.

Renzor and Fincher have collaborated in the past on lauded film soundtracks such as The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and 2014’s hit Gone Girl. They began their long association with Reznor contributing to Fincher’s soundtrack for the movie Seven and the Nine Inch Nails video for ‘Only’ from With Teeth (Interscope).

Muse – Drones

Muse drones album cover 2015

Muse didn’t become one of the biggest bands in the world by accident. They put in years cultivating their style of smart arena rock, dreamy synthy pop cadences with a super intellectual, cynical bent. Usually once you become to successful, your art starts to suffer. Muse proves on Drones (Warner Bros.) that they have entered their second decade as a band as hungry as ever.

In typical fashion, the lead track and bona-fide hit single ‘Dead Inside’ is the album’s catchiest ear-worm, yet is highly subversive. I giggle to myself thinking of teenagers bumping this song on the way to school, parents unaware of the lyrical nature of the track. The slick pop rock of the tune aside, you can tell a well written song when you hear one, with clever key changes and great singing from Matthew Bellamy. He shines throughout Drones.

‘Drill Sargeant’ gives way to ‘Psycho’ which could give Marilyn Manson a run for his mascara in the goth-rock swing he perfected so well; right down to Christopher Wolstenholme’s distorted bass rumble. One thing that Muse has done well historically is to infuse their dystopic visions of the future with slivers of hopefulness. ‘Mercy’ is a rousing anthem of pain and possibility. Initially I was put off by ‘Reapers’ weak opening: kind of a slo-mo guitaring ‘Hot For Teacher’, but without the great drumming. But the full track itself is an ass kicker. Punk beats, big riffs and a great delivery from Bellamy again. To say that ‘Handler’ sounds like it could have easily been written by Trent Reznor 10 years ago, is a high compliment. Another giant, ebullient chorus you will be singing for days. The last third of the album is not quite a strong as its opening however, with tracks such as ‘Defector’ and ‘Revolt’ being a little too ELO sounding, even for a nerd like me. This is the part of the album where producer Mutt Lange flexed his muscles, so hard. ‘The Globalist’ saves the day though. Epic in scope, rain drops falling, lonesome Western-themed whistle, despondent protagonist going through an epic transformation emotionally, and all the musical movements reflecting that change. Amazing! The title-track/finale is a gorgeous display of chorale style singing and heart-string tugging words and solid way to put a bow on another release from modern rock’s royalty.

Apple, who recently purchased Beats Music for $3 billion, is reportedly using resources from that acquisition to help design its own music streaming service to rival digital music services such as Spotify. Trent Reznor, who was a Chief Creative Officer for Beats Music, is now said to be “playing a major role” in helping Apple come up with a streaming music service of their own, and also planning an enhanced iTunes Radio that may be targeting listeners in regional markets, according to sources familiar with the product. Those sources have indicated that the Beats Music name will likely be shelved in favor of the new service and no free option will be offered.
