ALBUM REVIEW: SECT – Plagues Upon Plagues


Former Cursed frontman Chris Colohan, is the driving force behind SECT’s dark take on Hardcore. Colohan might not be the band’s most well-known member (which would be Fall Out Boy’s drummer Andy Hurley), but regardless, it’s Colohan’s voice that sets apart their new album, Plagues Upon Plagues (Southern Lord) from the current resurgence of metallic Hardcore bands. Colohan’s husky croon gives a wink in the direction of Neurosis. His approach not only brings the articulated lyrics to the forefront but adds more depth to the dark tension of the music. When he does begin screaming as the punch of the riffs hits home, it has a greater dynamic impact. Continue reading

In dire times of crisis and injustice caused by oppressive systems, the least we can do is to voice our aspirations through the creative media that we have going and that’s what the hardcore unit Racetraitor have been doing. Racetraitor has always been a band that’s ahead of their time – voicing opinions on systemic racism and white privilege before they were even often discussed in a large audience.

Despite their name, Chicago’s newly formed Ready for Death offer more of a hardcore and thrash style in their debut offering. With 10 tracks and a run time of a little over 20 minutes, their self-titled debut on Translation Loss offers plenty of furious tales about chaos and destruction in a compact package.

SHUT IT DOWN – A Benefit For The Movement For Black Lives has been launched, raising money and awareness at this crucial time. Priced at $10 dollars for 46 songs, ALL proceeds from SHUT IT DOWN will go to the organization the Movement for Black Lives (m4bl.org), which strives to end the criminalization and dehumanization of black people in the United States. Full transparency for all donations will be posted. The compilation was organized by Mani Mostofi of Chicago hardcore outfit, Racetraitor, and features 46 metal, hardcore, punk, and noise acts that have come together to raise funds for the Movement for Black Lives. The comp features tracks by many heavy hitters including Sunn 0))), Xibalba, Misery Signals, and Modern Life is War, Thou, Primitive Man, Racetraitor, Amygdala, and the first new music from Rwake in 9 years! Morne, Cloud Rat, Chepang, Heavy Temple, Booked For Black Flags Over Brooklyn


Black Flags Over Brooklyn 2019 will be New York’s first-ever anti-fascist extreme metal festival! They have announced their full lineup for their show taking place Friday, January 25th and Saturday, January 26th at Brooklyn Bazaar. The Friday night show will be followed by an all-day Saturday event that will include an all-day vendor market of band merch, label distros, radical publishers, activist organizations, local artisans, and more. Fifteen bands from all over the world will play including Dawn Ray’d, Cloud Rat, Racetraitor, Ragana, Vile Creature, Closet Witch, Morne, Chepang, Whitephosphorous, Sunrot, Trophy Hunt, Heavy Temple, Axebreaker, and Niuta are all set to play.
