Roadburn Festival, largely due to the impetus of its main organiser and curator Walter Hoeijmakers, has often acted as a hub for all manner of interesting collaborations between artists who sit in the arty or experimental corners of the heavy music world. German post-Rock solo artist Gideon Kretschmer releases music under the moniker Lava Suit. The multi-instrumentalist and vocalist writes alone but likes to collaborate with artists across the globe, including Ramon Rabie from Thailand on Lava Suits’ latest two singles, including “Follow” the new single out now via HopePunk Records. Tying together threads of emotions drummed up with laconic beats, synths, amazing layers of guitars, hypnotic melodies and his entrancing vocals, Kretschmer creates a sonic landscape to spirit you away to another dimension, inside your mind. ALBUM REVIEW: REZN – Chaotic Divine

After a few out-of-genre collaborations with Lume and Catchechism, REZN’s third proper album returns to their signature Electric Wizard meets Elder on Quaaludes style. Chaotic Divine (Off The Record Label) is right in line with its predecessors, for the most part, pairing the sprawling length of 2017’s Let It Burn with the broadened atmospherics and instrumentation of 2018’s Calm Black Water. However, the heightened Ambient and Post Rock influences have resulted in what is easily their most ambitious effort so far.

ALBUM REVIEW: Chrome Waves – Where We Live

Considering the lengthy silence between Chrome Waves self-titled EP in 2012 and 2019’s  A Grief Observed, it’s great that the group has been so prolific since their comeback. Their second full-length album, Where We Live (Disorder Recordings), picks up where its predecessor left off while featuring its own set of changes. Dustin Boltjes (ex-Skeletonwitch, Sacred Leather) is on drums in place of the tragically passed Bob Fouts, and the eclectic influences behind the band’s melancholic sound are given room to expand even further.Continue reading →


Anathema Announces Their Indefinite Hiatus

Anathema has announced they are disbanding effective immediately. The band had booked and canceled several tours of what was to be a huge cycle for the band and they cited the difficulties during the global pandemic as the reason. They legendary post-Rock band leaves behind a legacy of incredible albums and unforgettable shows. Perhaps we will see them again someday. The band was working on new music for a 2021 release. ALBUM REVIEW: Deftones –  Ohms

“Deftones 2020” would be quite the fitting campaign slogan this year.  Faced with frightening realities, unexpected downs, and challenging changes, Deftones have swooped in to provide a sonic escape and maybe even a ray of hope in a time that has been plagued by a series of unfortunate events. Though President Chino Moreno may seem like a stretch (for now), Deftones have spun these unforeseen circumstances and unprecedented experiences into something fans can hold onto during this period of struggle: the highly-anticipated LP, Ohms, due out September 25th (Warner Records).  2020 is also a hallmark year in the Sacramento-born band’s career, as they celebrate 25 years since dropping their searing debut Adrenaline, 20 years since releasing their incomparable album White Pony, 10 years since unveiling their emotive and piercing record Diamond Eyes, and one presidential term since gracing fans with their eighth studio album Gore. Now, vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, programmer Frank Delgado, and bassist Sergio Vega welcome Ohms,  10 tracks of heavy and reflective material that mirror the emotional distress of the pandemic and lockdown, the political power struggle that the world is witnessing, and the internal conflicts many are facing.Continue reading →

Lesser Glow provides us an excellent example of consistency and development in their sophomore record Nullity (Pelagic Records), full of heavy, melodic, and huge wall of sounds that will keep you wanting more. CLASSIC ALBUMS REVISITED: Deftones Released “Diamond Eyes” Ten Years Ago

Deftones, even at their best, have been a band of dichotomies. That is what makes them a special band in the history of heavy music: opposing forces pulling and pushing them apart and back again. They may have been coming apart at the seams in the run-up to making Diamond Eyes (Reprise), and you couldn’t blame them. If you follow the band closely, you know the history. The band was nearly done tracking their highly anticipated album Eros in the fall of 2008, when founding bassist Chi Cheng was in a car wreck, on his way home from a funeral. Chi was left in a vegetative state, and the band was in shock. As Chi fought for his life (he passed in 2013, RIP), the band was left wondering what to do. They wanted to make music, but the experience with their best friend caused them to shelve Eros, never to be heard (almost never). When they came back together, the results were unexpected and wild.
