NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: February 25th New Music Releases
ALBUM REVIEW: Saxon – Inspirations – Silver Lining Music
With no less than twenty-two studio albums behind them, NWOBHM legends Saxon are back again but with something a little different this time. Instead of just rummaging around in the attic for an old live recording, or throwing together a contractually obliged “Best Of…”, Barnsley’s finest have taken their time during lockdown to produce something a little more imaginative. Looking to the past, the band has recorded Inspirations (Silver Lining Music/Militia Guard), a collection of songs by artists who made an impact on them at the start of their musical journey. ALBUM REVIEW: Sonic Flower – Rides Again
Japan’s Sonic Flower began in the early 2000s as an offshoot of Church of Misery. They released one self-titled album in 2003 and then broke up in 2005 following some aborted recording sessions. Reforming briefly in 2007, only to break up again the same year, Sonic Flower lay dormant for 14 years until they finally reformed again in 2019. A full-length album with a new lineup including a vocalist is scheduled for later in 2021. To whet their fans’ appetite in the meantime, the band are first releasing Rides Again (Heavy Psych Sounds Records), which consists entirely of tracks recorded in 2005 from the aforementioned aborted sessions.
Watch Kill The Ideal’s Hilarious Video for their Cover of “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin
Metallers Kill The Ideal has released a new single and video, right in time for time spent on the frosty winter fjord. The band has dropped their cover of Led Zeppelin’s Viking Saga classic – “Immigrant Song” with a hysterical tongue-in-cheek music video as well. The band recently announced the February 2021 release of their new EP, Against The World, which you can pre-order at the link below.
Led Zeppelin Streams New Single Versions of “Led Zeppelin III” Tracks
Led Zeppelin released Led Zeppelin III 50 years ago in the U.S., on October 5, 1970, with the U.K. and other countries following a few weeks later. Known as the “unplugged” Zep album, it does have a ton of great plugged in moments, rock anthems, but a lot of variety that encompasses their eclectic style. In celebration of the record’s 50th anniversary, the band will reissue the Japanese version of the album’s only single — “Immigrant Song” backed with the non-album track “Hey, Hey, What Can I Do” — on seven-inch vinyl. Limited to 19,700 copies, it comes in a sleeve that replicates the original artwork. The single will be released on January 15, 2021, and can be pre-ordered at the link below. Listen to “Immigrant Song” and “Hey, Hey, What Can I Do” right now.
The Supreme Court Will Not Hear Copyright Dispute Between Led Zeppelin And Spirit
In August, the estate of Randy “California” Wolfe filed a petition for a writ of certiorari in their ongoing case against Led Zeppelin, asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a March 2020 ruling by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upholding the 2016 trial verdict that found “Stairway To Heaven” was not a copy of “Taurus”. Bloomberg Law Supreme Court reporter Kimberly Robinson tweeted: “#SCOTUS won’t hear copyright dispute over legendary ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ No. 20-142 Skidmore v. Led Zeppelin.”
EP REVIEW: South of Eden – The Talk
South of Eden, a classic rock-esq band from Ohio, release an EP, The Talk (LAVA Music), to eager supporters, new admirers, and all-around music connoisseurs. The Talk presents listeners with a wonderful classic rock era sound. Think the mid to late seventies through the early nineties; when rock was fun, light, airy, and full of awesome guitar riffs and harmonies that sweep you off your feet and float you away to rock and roll heaven. It may sound like an over-exaggeration, but pick up The Talk and you will smile in understanding.
