Prolific Miami DIY artist Patrick Doval is has dropped a brand new single/video ‘Broken Girl’! This is the follow-up to his last album Broken, which released this past January. Ghost Cult caught up with actor and music legend London May to discuss one of his current projects, the award-winning Brutal Realty, Inc. Most people know London for his time in Samhain and other punk and metal bands, but he has had an impressive career as a character actor in dramas, the horror genre, and comedy too! Combining all of these elements, Brutal Realty, Inc. also features Sarah Burns from HBO’s Barry and a fantastic and brutal musical score composed by Sanford Parker (Buried At Sea, Corrections House, Mirrors For Psychic Warfare), Dallas Thomas (Pelican), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Corrections House, Sick Gazelle), and Charlie Fell (Lord Mantis, Cobalt). You can see and hear why the project has won awards and respect. We discussed his work on the film, his approach to acting roles such as The Dark Knight Rises, and Glenn Danzig’s recent Verotika film, his ongoing Black Metal bands, and film scoring work for the film and other projects, and much more!
A single support in RDF (Radical Dance Faction) are in store for the hundred or so that are here with me by the time they come on stage, the numbers a touch disappointing for a gig that is sold out for the full tour. Against their name, their music is actually more eclectic Dub, making little sense at first in terms of who they are supporting, though this notion changes as they get further into their set, with a bit more of their stated Punk side coming out to play. While not awful, the audience around me doesn’t seem particularly engaged, with plenty of chatting going on, though there is some polite applause at the end of each track, while a few people do seem to genuinely enjoy some tracks. They occasionally bring on another vocalist to help out, though not to any particularly great effect. In all, a fairly forgettable support act, which is a shame given they have existed for over three decades at this point, as they just don’t feel right for the act they are supporting.Continue reading
One of the best parts about reviewing albums is getting to deconstruct the music on the album and expose the soft squishy underbelly that the band hides deep within the tracks. The newest release from 3TEETH, Metawar (RED Music), is a case in point. The third studio album from the Los Angeles-based band is a cataclysmic master stroke pregnant with thinly veiled innuendo and tightly coiled enigma. Italian alt/electro-rock duo Soaware is releasing their new album, Soaware tomorrow. Founded by the duo of Damiano Bessi and Emanuele Grazioli, the inventive alternative rockers have hopes to infect the rest of the world with their songs. They first met in 1999 while playing in the band Mad Cobol, later splitting to join other groups. With Soaware, the band channels the familiar churning magnetic pulse of Industrial, the melancholy soulfulness of Goth, and the rawness of Metal. April 14th is a hard day for fans of Type of Negative, as we continue to mourn the loss of legendary frontman Peter Steele who died on this day in 2010. He was only 48 years old. He would have turned 57 this year. Join us as we recall the life and musical legacy of the titan from the 1990s.
Here in the UK, a power metal tour of any capacity is a cause for mass celebration due to their relative infrequency. Generally speaking, a power metal act will make a sporadic appearance in London alone, and possibly a major summer festival here and there, meaning that unlucky Richards like yours truly in the north or the Midlands will miss out on the action. I’m not going to waste my time going over the importance of the band Bauhaus or how many musicians, artists, and writers their music has influenced since they began in 1978, instead I will assume that either you are already aware of their impact or, at the very least, you have a device that can provide you with some much-needed knowledge. Perhaps a smartphone. You know, the rectangular shaped overpriced object you hold out in front of you at a concert and watch the entire show on instead of experiencing it as it happens right in front of you. If you were in fact, paying attention to the stage and not the lit up screen on your phone you were treated to two of the original members of Bauhaus, Peter Murphy and David J., along with Mark Slutsky on drums and Mark Gemini Thwaite on guitar, powering through the entire first Bauhaus album In The Flat Field (4AD) followed by a healthy dose of classics from the bands catalog.
