The past few years the hottest ticket in Black Metal has been anything out of Iceland. Starting with Svarti Daudi, followed by Sinmara and Misthyrming, these guys from the sparsely populated island in the near The Arctic Ocean are shaking the world wherever they go. The people involved in these bands have a pretty special take on black metal: having been isolated as long as they are they’re not as concerned with who they want to sound like or who they know, but find their own way through expressing the misery of every day life.Continue reading

On The Road… with Subrosa

sisubrosa-fall-2016-tour-ghostcultmag

Having just released one of the best albums of 2016, Subrosa has embarked on a furious set of tour dates world-wide. The Salt Lake City chamber-doom band is riding high with For This We Fought the Battle of Ages released via Profound Lore. Ghost cult scribe Paul Quinn wrote in his glowing review of the album “SubRosa continues to breathe and grow, and its ability to stir passion and heart-rending sadness is only further proven with surely the most fluid, emotive, engaging and downright magnificent set of its career. “, and it hard to find a flaw in that assessment.Continue reading

Megadeth – Amon Amarth – Suicidal Tendencies: Live At The DCU Center

megadeth-butcher-babies-tour

Megadeth continues their resurgence for their current album Dystopia (Tradecraft). Bolstered by the recent addition of former Soilwork drummer Dirk Verbeuren, Dave Mustaine and company sound amazing live these days from the few times we’ve caught their act in 2016. To pull off a tour of this magnitude (small arenas) in this day an age where some bands are struggling to fill small clubs is admirable. Openers Butcher Babies and Metal Church certainly have their own crowds of fans, but the three main acts couldn’t be better or more evenly matched. Continue reading

Playing a set entirely from the new album A Harrowed Dawn (Secret Law Records) the new look Iron Witch take to a stage so dark that if they weren’t making noise you might not have known they were there. In many ways the absence of any real visual spectacle emphasising the churning torment of their harrowing sound, although they might have overdone it with the darkness. Continue reading

We have followed Halestorm’s career with close intent at Ghost Cult. Akercocke – The King Is Blind – Impavidus: Live at Academy 3, Manchester UK

renaissance-in-extremism-tour-poster-akercoke-tkib-ghostcultmag

One of Manchester’s brightest up-and-coming lights opened this autumn evening, the first night of a huge week of metal in the city. Impavidus were as tight as hell, the commonly-used MeloDeath soubriquet seeming very wide of the mark despite Michelle Adamson’s staggering use of harsh and clean vocals and some howling leadplay from Gav Smith

On The Road… with Opeth And The Sword

opeth-sorceress-world-tour-ghostcultmag

Few bands will divide fans like Opeth, and fewer bands still care as little what you think about them. “ProgOpeth” is here to stay and “Melodeathandblackenedwhatchamacallit Opeth” are only coming out to play once in a blue moon; and only in a live setting. Deal with it. Continue reading

opeth-radio-city-music-hall
