For so many bands reuniting over the years, fanbases have become apprehensive on whether to expect a quick cash-grab or if the bands are back for real.

War Waves – War Waves

11709636_1608736659403980_7245325933492140647_n

If art is a manifestation of the human spirit and the human heart, then I wouldn’t have liked to have gone through the emotional pain and heartache that War Waves lead singer and chief protagonist Marc Newby has been through. His latest artistic endeavour, following on from his previous outfit, Collisions, has been conceived as an attempt to win back the love of his life.

Working with Steve Mann at Backwater Records, a man who has been a longtime champion and supporter of bands from the Ipswich area, War Waves passionate and heartfelt approach to songwriting will appeal to the ears of listeners already won over by the likes of The Gaslight Anthem or Idlewild; listeners of a certain vintage will doubtless be able to wax lyrical over the more than occasional nod to Mr. Stephen Patrick Morrissey.

These are no bad things of course. There is a rawness and emotional heft to the songs that often startle as much as they reassure. Whether down to the colourful language in the lyrics- the dropping of the c-bomb once or twice raises the eyebrow- or the matter of fact candour, the net effect is immediate and dynamic. The production retains that sense of this record being recorded as live and that lack of tinkering adds to the sense of a man on a zealous, emotional mission.

The ordinariness of the songs settings – ‘My Friends Wedding’ andHockey Stick’ are good examples of this – and the universal messages within them remind one, thematically at least, of the kitchen sink dramas beloved of The Streets or Plan B or, even Jarvis Cocker at his most suburban. Newby’s drama is highly personal but his honesty and lack of self-serving sanctimony means you are drawn to his tale. The fact that he has a way with a tune doesn’t hurt either.

Newby pulls no punches and grants no quarter; fortunately there’s an absence of hubris as well which is all the more appealing given the self-satisfaction that often accompanies records that are about the state of a heart. War Waves have conjured a decent début album with plenty of ideas and flourishes that you will doubtless be filing very readily under: ones to watch.

Sammy Kay Streaming “Saints and Sinner”

Sammy Kay

Sammy Kay

Singer/songwriter Sammy Kay is streaming “Saints and Sinner,” off his upcoming full length debut album Fourth Street Singers out March 10, 2015 via Panic State Records, here.

Hailing from Asbury Park, NJ singer/songwriter Sammy Kay has lived the kind of romantic life that can only be found in a song. After living in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, then seeing the world working as a tour manager for three years, Kay has used his travels and experiences to hone his song-craft into an endearing mixture of punk rock, Americana, and soul. Always behind-the-scenes helping other artist’s grow and succeed, Kay built strong friendships all across the country, these friends would later come together to help record his debut album. Now, with the release of his debut full length, Fourth Street Singers, Sammy Kay is excited to step into the spotlight and show listeners what he’s capable of.

Recorded by Pete Steinkopft of The Bouncing Souls at Little Eden Studios, Fourth Street Singers was crafted from the ground up with an all-star cast of accomplished musicians, featuring members of The Slackers, Franz Nicolay’s band, Rancid‘s touring band, Westbound Train, Leftover Crack, Plow United and more. The sense of camaraderie from the recording studio is palpable across the 10 tracks on Fourth Street Singers, but Kay’s songs are more than just bar anthems. There is a yearning that can’t be denied in every song. Whether it’s a desire for truth, connection, or something more, these tracks feel authentic and lived-in. Even Kay’s take on the Tom Waits classic “Old Shoes (Pictures And Postcards)” feels entwined with the story told on Fourth Street Singers.

Harnessing influences ranging across the spectrums of rock n’ roll, punk, and Americana, Sammy Kay has crafted an album that is uniquely personal while still invitingly familiar, wild and free while still reserved and dynamic. Full of love and despair, life and death, salvation and American rock n’ roll, Fourth Street Singers is Sammy Kay.
