Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back

I once opined on these humble pages that Motörhead didn’t do bad albums, merely good ones and great ones, and it has to be said that this proud epithet should also be bestowed upon the filthy and the few that make up Orange Goblin. It has been some twenty-one years since their debut, the still worthy Frequencies From Planet Ten (Rise Above), and for the ninth time the turbo effalunt has been charged up, the band are getting high on the bad times, and the red tide rises once more. Continue reading

Voices – Frightened

One of the saddest parts about Akercocke going on hiatus all those years ago was the fact that after Words That Go Unspoken… and Antichrist (Earache) there was a tangible feeling that they were on course to release something truly ground-breaking. Whilst their recent release Renaissance in Extremis (Peaceville) was very welcome indeed, I couldn’t help but feel that the return to an earlier sound left that potential untapped. Continue reading

Winterfylleth – The Hallowing of Heirdom

Come live with me and be my love” are not the kind of opening lyrics you expect from a veteran Black Metal band. But in new album, The Hallowing of Heirdom (Candlelight) the UK’s premier Black Metal act Winterfylleth have gone full acoustic. No blast beats, not screaming howls, no buzzsaw riffs. Just beautiful acoustic warmth.Continue reading

Electric Wizard – Wizard Bloody Wizard

UK Doom outfit Electric Wizard are rightly held in high regard. One of the few bands to proudly wear the influence of Black Sabbath long before it became cool again, Jus Oborn & co. were making dirty, but earth-rattling Doom like no one else at the time. These days, there’s no shortage of bands aping the band’s classic material. But based on the evidence of new album Wizard Bloody Wizard (Spinefarm), the imposters probably do it better than Electric Wizard themselves these days.Continue reading
