Pause for a moment, dearly beloved, and check out THAT COVER. See it, feel it, breathe it in. It is Ian Miller at his gothic grotesque best like someone crossed a lurid creepy crawly with a bad trip in a fin de siècle opium den. It’s got one of Lovecraft’s Elder Thing exploding with mouths, beaks, eyes and profane wind instruments, striding through a cancerous landscape full of writhing horror and grandeur. It is also my laptop’s Christmas wallpaper.Continue reading

Terrible Claw – Sickening Annihilation
Although it sounds more like some kind of horrifying children’s book from in the 1970s, Nog and the Hospital of Death is actually the origin story of UK act Terrible Claw. Introduced to each other by a mutual bandmate in Birmingham over ten years ago, guitarist Paul Harrington (Nog, Anaal Nathrakh, Fukpig, Kroh) struck up a friendship with fellow guitarist Stuart Pendergast (H.O.D., Neanderthal), and shortly after formed Danmaku along with vocalist Mike Pilat (Bad Precedent, Collusion), releasing their debut Turn Up the Gas (Thrash Lizard) in 2011. Unfortunately, personnel problems became an issue and Danmaku disappointingly only managed to play one single show, disbanding shortly after.Continue reading
Yob – Our Raw Heart
Acclaimed Oregon Doom trio Yob have returned from the very brink with their stunning eighth album Our Raw Heart (Relapse). Following a well-publicized near death experience owing to a particularly awful battle with diverticulitis Yob mastermind Mike Scheidt has channeled the experience into a very personal emotive record, which resonates with the listener both musically and emotionally. Continue reading
Tomb Mold – Manor of Infinite Forms
Damn, if it feels good to be a Death Metal fan. Last year’s extreme harvest gave us albums from Obituary, Artificial Brain, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Immolation, Decapitated, and Tomb Mold just to name a few. And so far, this year is shaping up to be another fruitful one with efforts from At The Gates, The Crown, Pestilence, Rivers of Nihil and Tomb Mold. Wait, what? In the span of one year, this Torontonian act has written and recorded another LP in Manor of Infinite Forms (20 Buck Spin).Continue reading
Morbid Angel Live At The Worcester Palladium
Skeletal Remains – Devouring Mortality
Has Death Metal become the most crowded of the extreme genres? I ask because the last few years have been absolutely stacked with stellar releases ranging from the old guard (Morbid Angel, Obituary) to the new breed (Archspire, Artificial Brain). One must come absolutely correct to make it in the house that Chuck Schuldiner built. Skeletal Remains has the right stuff in spurts on Devouring Mortality (Dark Descent) but aren’t quite ready to run with the wolves yet.Continue reading

Hooded Menace – Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed
Falling into the category of bands with names that really aren’t as scary as they probably think they are, Finland’s Hooded Menace may sound like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon villain with gnarled fingers and a sinister laugh who hangs around creepy looking abandoned fairgrounds, but their music is the embodiment of shit-your-pants scary Death/Doom Metal.Continue reading
