ALBUM REVIEW: Liturgy – 93696
When it comes to describing 93696 (Thrill Jockey), the latest album by Liturgy, one could just as well start by describing what this album is not. It is not a record to easily put on in the background and definitely not a go-to if you want to reduce your anxiety. Pretty much the opposite is true. This is a record screaming in your ears for attention, that induces anxiety all along the way.
ALBUM REVIEW: Bush – The Art of Survival
Since relaunching Bush in 2010, the Gavin Rossdale and Chris Traynor partnership (Traynor taking on the right-hand role in the band once Rossdale resumed performing under the Bush banner in the stead of the retired Nigel Pulsford) have, in an understated way, added to the band’s legacy, producing five albums, and a slew of consistently decent tunes.
ALBUM REVIEW Black Lung – Dark Waves
It is a time of change for the Baltimore based psych-doom three piece Black Lung, who following the release of their third album Ancients in 2019, parted ways with founding guitarist Adam Bufano, replacing him with Deaf Scene’s Dave Fullerton. Four months later and their subsequent tour of the album was cancelled as the pandemic struck, so the band decided to regroup and start working on fresh material with their new guitar player straight away. REVIEW ROUNDUP: King Buffalo, Bog Wizard, Spaceslug, and Dead King’s Peace
King Buffalo – Archeron
Seemingly taking a page from their fellow royals in King Gizzard, Archeron (Stickman Records) is the second album that King Buffalo has released in 2021. This degree of output can make the band’s already prolific discography seem even more muddled, especially since they are so committed to their loose, jammed out take on Heavy Psych. But as pretentious as it sounds, recording Archeron in a cave (WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!) seems to give the band’s usual sonic landscapes a slightly different makeover.
Nick Oliveri Shares New Single – “I Am Your Sun”
Stoner-Doom royalty Nick Oliveri (Mondo Generator, Stoner, Dwarves, Death Machine, ex- Kyuss, Queens of The Stone Age) will release a new album, N.O. Hits At All Volume 7 compilation on Heavy Psych Sounds, July 2nd. Jam out to “I Am Your Sun” right now.
ALBUM REVIEW: Book Of Wyrms – Occult New Age
While the core sound behind Book Of Wyrms has always been a balance between Doom Metal and Space Rock, their third album sees the band committing much more to the latter. Occult New Age (Desert Records) retains the methodical tempos and some of the beefy riffs of 2019’s Remythologizer but ultimately devotes its atmospheric ends to lighter textures and looser structures. The heavier sequences have more in common than Kyuss than Cathedral and their underlying Hawkwind influence had previously never been highlighted to this extent.
