Front man Trevor Strnad commented on Abysmal:

“Once the record started to come together we knew it was going to be something special,” states vocalist Trevor Strnad. “It’s more urgent, it has more dynamics, it’s a more emotive record, and it has a more raw, angry sound to it. It’s still million mile-per-hour death metal, but when you invest so much thought and emotion into what you’re creating you end up with a record that does stand out, and we can hold our heads up high and say yeah, this is our best work.”

The Black Dahlia Murder streamed a new single today, ‘Receipt’, from their forthcoming album Abysmal. You can stream the track at this link at Revolver Magazine.

 

Abysmal released on September 18th from Metal Blade. Front man Trevor Strnad commented on ‘Receipt’:

 

“The song, ‘Receipt,’ is a very personal and emotional one for me. I wrote the lyrics in my darkest hour, when anxiety had bested me and self loathing had come to an ultimate head. I was alone. I felt like I couldn’t create anything, and I was about to lose all that in life that I hold dear to me to failure. The song was a cathartic release and I hope it can be some kind of help to someone out there who feels the same darkness. I truly love the song and I feel like its one of the best this band has ever written, and I thank you all for listening.”

Temples Festival 2015 Day 1: Live at Bristol, Motion

Kicking off Temples Festival with a torrid mix of grind and punk Teef are a rude awakening. Sadly the shrieking of their vocalist is only appropriate during the more intense moments with several mediocre riffs tempering what should have ignited the blue touch paper. Oblivionized are much better. Nasty atonal riffs á la Discordance Axis, the Londoners bash through relentless cuts from their ‘Life Is A Struggle, Give Up’ platter in a fashion which forces early comers to take note or die.

The second band in the second stage were Leeds based grinders The Afternoon Gentlemen. Unperturbed by waiting for the displaced Young And In The Way to conclude their set on the main stage they managed to bring their own brand of party atmosphere. The massive bouncy energy of the band transferring into an enthusiastic crowd with ease. Crowd surfers were present very early on as well as paramedics. The Yorkshiremen Pummeled the crowd with song after song playing some newer tracks from the record they have coming out later this year. Grind is one of those genre’s that has to be done right and the ‘Gents certainly do it right but their performance struggles to hold the attention of the audience with many drifting away towards the end of the set.

Enabler are a revelation. Taking to the stage displaying a terrifying ferocity, they receive a huge reception from the crowd. A particularly potent mix of hardcore with a large side helping of metal. The second they started like a kick to the gut and it was immediately obvious they weren’t here to mess about, and the audience knew it. This was an impassioned performance which was quite incredible to watch. In a festival with no shortage of amazing bands Enabler proved to be a real highlight.

Deathwish signees’ Harm’s Way deliver their pulverising metallic hardcore to an appreciative small crowd. Brusing mosh fodder which won’t change the world but can certainly help work up a sweat.

Most of us rarely start a festival by being told to fuck off, but for those of us that headed over to catch an early set by blackened crusters Young and in the Way, that’s exactly how Temples 2015 kicked off. While many wouldn’t dare insult the fans, it fit perfectly into their take no prisoners sound. Those squeezing themselves into the tiny third for a dose of filth from the New Zealanders Meth Drinker were treated to a wall of slow gnarly distortion.

Trap Them’s first UK show in four years is heralded with unbridled enthusiasm and the group reciprocates every last bit of energy they receive, delivering a watertight set of no bullshit brutality. Numbers from ‘Darker Handcraft’ eventuate intensity and unhinged aggression. Seering filth encrusted riffage and brutal blasts see the main stage temperature rising to fever pitch.\\

Sacramento’s Will Haven punish the main stage with Grady Avenell cutting an intimidating figure onstage.The dissonant groove of ‘Fresno’ ignites a thunderous response with material from new EP Open The Mind To Discomfort getting a good airing alongside juicy cuts from the quintet’s stellar back catalogue. Sheer unbridled aggression tempered with the eerie melodies conjured by Jeff Irwin and Anthony Paganelli ensure this performance is nothing short of enthralling.

Ramping up the speed again, Magrundergrind whipped up the festival crowd as beer cans were replaced with people being thrown through the air. With the songs averaging just a minute apiece there was plenty of time to cram in the crowd pleasers. Eight hundred bruises and a sore neck later, we’re pretty sure that was a good time… if only we could think past all the concussion.

Nails may have been the more extreme proposition but Weedeater were no less deranged. Frontman Dixie looks truly unhinged, his cross-eyed forty-yard stare burning holes in the crowd while Travis Owens pounds his kit mercilessly with style, even showboating with his sticks without missing a beat. Resin tinged anthems like ‘Gimmie Back My Bullets’ provide more than enough material for those who the motto ‘tune low, play slow’ is a way of life.

It quickly became apparent that songs about “people who talk fucking shit,” is a mantra for Californian based Nails. Repeated before most tracks, it quickly turned into a bit of light comedy relief, which was welcome as the band were on devastating form that evening churning out track after track of ground-shakingly heavy grinding. Despite their popularity, Nails sound feels more at home in a grimy basement cellar, and seeing them on such a large stage just didn’t seem to translate as well as it should have. The same could not be said for Pig Destroyer. Heading out for the first of their two sets that weekend they threw the crowd into the nastiest cuts of grindcore from their collection. Members of the crowd who had any space to breath could count themselves lucky as the room dissolved into a crushed mass of bodies. The sacrifice? Flailing limbs and flying bodies: wherever you stood it was a slaughterhouse.

Who knew metalcore could fit in so well in this line-up. While the genre may have a bad reputation among doom fans, Converge are providing a lifeline to the genre with their powerful and energetic performance. Twisting the wires round his throat and clasping his head, front man Jacob Bannon seems endearingly honest performance backed by their abrasive, twisting backing. Converge proved that twenty-five years of performing is no excuse not to pull out a blindingly energetic set.

A rare UK outing for Bongzilla ensures the outdoor stage is packed despite impressive opposition from Boston trailblazers Converge. Dealing in the kind of lumbering riffs that revel in their atavistic primitively, they’re the idea doom act to close a darkened stage with their Neanderthal low end anthems. Undeterred by the completion, the Wisconsin act delivers a herculean performance of Sabbathian might which while somewhat myopic in is focus, remains a potent high which concludes day one in style.

Wolfnote – Wolfnote EP

When musicians form a new band alongside their current band, it is safe to say that they usually stick to a similar genre, or even the same genre. This cannot be said for Wolfnote, who are comprised of members from Harm’s Way. For those of you who are not familiar with them, Harm’s Way are a popular metallic hardcore band from Chicago, who usually create hardcore music. If you are looking for brutal riffs to headbang to then you have definitely been mistaken, as Wolfnote are an alternative rock group with infectiously catchy riffs.

Although the EP comprises of only three songs, it manages to give you a good indication of what Wolfnote are about: solid riffs, haunting vocals and well-written lyrics. Opening track ‘Luna’ is a passionate and hard-hitting rock anthem, and it is instantly apparent that they have strong influences from Alkaline Trio.

‘Sick’ begins with a more mellow and melancholy riff, not dissimilar from something that The Cure would use. The strong and passionate vocals are able to shine through perfectly, making a powerful impact on the listener.

Final song ‘Prowl’ is upbeat and fast-paced, returning to the style of the first track. The harmonies sound beautiful, and you can instantly tell that every member of Wolfnote is a talented musician. Sounding like a fusion of Alkaline Trio and Bayside, Wolfnote are able to introduce a new wave of music fans to the alternative rock and punk genres.

Although Wolfnote probably will not appeal to fans of Harm’s Way, it is easy to see exactly why so many people have been excited to hear this self-titled EP (Head2Wall). If you are a fan of alternative rock/punk then you should definitely keep an eye on Wolfnote: it won’t be long until the whole world knows about them.

Immortal Bird Announces Upcoming US Tour

Chicago blackened death grinders Immortal Bird will be doing an upcoming US tour. They will be doing songs off of their new album Empress/Abscess, out in late June. The album was tracked by Pete Grossman (Weekend Nachos, Harm’s Way, Dead In The Dirt) at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, Illinois earlier this year and mixed and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice, Nader Sadek, Atheist, Origin etc.) at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves in Queens, New York. Empress/Abscess includes a guest appearance by John Hoffman of Weekend Nachos and finds former drummer/vocalist, Rae Amitay, trading in her drum stool for a full-time position at the mic with longtime live drummer, Garry Naples (Novembers Doom) taking her place.

Harm’s Way – Rust

Being very picky with hardcore music, I am very quick to pass up opportunities to listen to new hardcore music and just appreciate what I have in my library. Having said that, I am very fortunate to have been provided quite an addition with the latest album, Rust (Deathwish), by Chicago hardcore outfit, Harm’s Way. It does not take long for this album to ramp up and put you in a stranglehold. Whether the beat is punky, heavy, or just a crushing breakdown, these guys certainly bring to light what it is to be hardcore. Another aspect of the sound that makes up Harm’s Way is the guitar tone. I feel like the tone has that great crust feel to it without going so far as to turning into sludge. If that wasn’t going to sell this band’s sound to me, then looking at their Facebook page certainly did. In the about section, under “artists we also like,” only Nails is listed. It was like a match made in Hell!

The entire journey that is Rust clocks in at just over 33 minutes over the course of ten adrenaline injecting tracks. The overall flow of the album does not allow the listener to take many breaks as each track blends right into the next with minimal down time during intros. Another impressive trait for this release from Harm’s Way is that each track in the album has its own identity without repetitive riffs or even covered with the predictable breakdown. Due to this I could honestly speak about every track on Rust and explain how I felt the need to deconstruct each song. No need to fear as I like to keep my reviews quick rather open ended so it makes readers potentially go out and listen for themselves. What I can tell you is the moment the first track ‘Infestation’ starts its build up and gets moving, this avalanche of crusty hardcore does not stop until the 5th track, ‘Cancerous Ways.’ This track only gives you a slight break for air before leaping off the next cliff and drags you with it. Not to take away from the second half of the album, but the final two tracks back to back absolutely blew me away and end the album with an explanation point. ‘Turn To Stone’ builds up to an interlude with a female vocalist (which I cannot seem to place at time of writing this) pleading for help only to meet a grizzly breakdown. This then fades into the closer, ‘Ease My Mind’ which is the culmination of every previous track with catchy riffs, crusty guitar tones, some crafty foot work behind the drum set, and a groovy yet epic outro to what Harm’s Way calls Rust. Just as quickly as this album takes over your ears, it leaves you just as quickly in silence.

Harm’s Way has clearly done a great job of impressing me only after about a half hour of my time. Quite frankly, it only took a few songs in for me to headbang through highway traffic and actually say the word “Wow” at the end of some of the tracks. I will certainly be spinning these tracks for the rest of the year, as Rust battles to earn its keep in my end of the year list. In fact, I’m going to go hit play right now.
