To say the history of Finnish Death Metallers Festerday is convoluted is like saying that the British Tory government has had a few mishaps recently. In a, sort of, thirty-year history, the band have undergone several changes of moniker and style, only returning to the name Festerday back in 2013, maintaining much of their core from 1989 with a line-up that has only taken a slight change since their return with Jani Kuoppamaa joining on drums. After a string of EP releases and splits in their early incarnation, this month sees them finally release a full-length debut in the solid, if unspectacular, iihtallan (Season Of Mist), where perhaps this varied history has had an impact.Continue reading →

Long-running metal festival Brutal Assault has made a massive announcement for 2019. One-hundred and thirty bands will play in the ancient and legendary Josefov Fortress castle on four stages all weekend from 7 -10 August 2019. So far the festival lineup is stacked with Dimmu Borgir, Godflesh, Anthrax, Meshuggah, Carcass, Sacred Reich, Carpenter Brut, Iron Reagan, Venom Prison, Thy Art Is Murder, Prong, Alien Weaponry, Deicide, Cult Of Luna, Get The Shot, Daughters and many more. Cancer – Shadow Gripped

It is interesting to see how a band who has not released new material for a significant period of time – twenty-four years in the case of Midlands (UK) Death Metallers Cancer  – will react to the task. As we know, Carcass, the test case, was an overwhelming success as Surgical Steel (Nuclear Blast) refined their previous styles into a singular, focused direction of travel with added bite. Subsequently, At The Gates also returned with a show of strength, albeit with a more reflective tone to this year’s output; once again, an alteration to previous ideas was the way forward for that troupe. Both acts showed deference to their seminal works, choosing not to take them head-on, referring to their past with respect, while carving a newer niche.Continue reading →

Download Festival has made a major announcement for 2019 with Def Leppard, Slipknot, and Tool announced as the three headliners. This is major news as Def Leppard, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominees are still a huge global touring act, while Slipknot and Tool seem poised to dominate in 2019 with new albums hopefully from each. Carcass Masterpiece “Heartwork” Turns Twenty-Five Years Old

Carcass didn’t invent death metal, but they helped perfect it. The didn’t ascend to the pantheon of the death and goregrind genres overnight either. Their earlier work, especially their debut Reek of Putrefaction, Symphonies of Sickness, and Tools of The Trade and a few EP’s were all growers. The band had a penchant of shifting genres and styles within songs and albums, owing to their talent, but displeasing some of the more ardent fans. They likely didn’t think about this or even discuss it, just musically going wherever the evil spirits guided at the time. This kept their growing fan base agitated, but interested to see what the band would do next in the burgeoning underground scene. So when Heartwork was unleashed on the world (Earache) in 1993, it seemed like all of these elements coalesced. Continue reading →


Bloodbath Announce New Album – “The Arrow Of Satan Is Drawn”

Fresh off of their appearance at Bloodstock Open Air 2018, Bloodbath has announced the release of a new album, their fifth overall, coming this fall via Peaceville Records. The delightfully evil sounding The Arrow Of Satan Is Drawn will release on October 26th. The kvlt supergroup is comprised of members of Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Opeth and Craft. The Agony Scene – Tormentor

The most obvious starting points when we come to talk about reunions has to be Carcass and At The Gates, who returned from hiatus without missing a beat to produce albums that stood worthy in their canons. Yet what neither behemoth managed to do though, and Surgical Steel (Nuclear Blast) in particular is a fantastic record, was exceed that which they had laid down before.
