Since George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher joined Floridian death metal legends Cannibal Corpse in 1995, he has gone on to become one of the most highly respected figures in death metal and beyond. Not just for his fearsome guttural roar or for the unnerving ability to grow a neck wider than most people’s heads, but because underneath all the sweat, hair and spit he just seems so damn loveable. From his well documented obsession with World of Warcraft to donating toys to charities and hospitals, it’s quite astonishing how a man who regularly vomits up lyrics about dismemberment, blowtorches, necrophilia and evisceration has gradually developed into something approximating a role model.

Mickey Mouse. Universal Studios. The Everglades. It’s a safe bet that among the first things that come to mind when everyday folk think about Florida, Death Metal wouldn’t even be as high on the list as some of those often unbelievable “Florida Man…” headlines. However, to a certain breed of humans, that particular southeastern state has been a location of serious interest since Death released their debut album back in 1987.

It had been coming for a while… the underground has been festering and bubbling under for the last few years. A new breed of leaders, including Blood Incantation (who have definitely already influenced many of their peers), Tomb Mold, Gatecreeper, Necrot and Undeath, among others, have taken on the mantle from the old titans; the lava has been flowing molten and in 2021 the subterranean erupted. Barely a week went by without at least one brain-melting addition to the pile of bodies…Continue reading
