Necrophobic – Mark of the Necrogram

Press play on Necrophobic’s Mark of the Necrogram (Century Media) and its crystal clear that these Swedish extreme metal pros are not in the business of fucking around. The title track explodes with no fancy introductions or orchestrations and grabs a hold of your scalp until you’ve surrendered any sense of control. Dramatic and sudden switches between Black and Death Metal ensue until we get some mild reprieve via Sebastian Ramstedt’s tasteful guitar solo. And that, ladies and gents, is the blueprint of the aural assault to come. Continue reading

Kaoteon – Damnatio Memoriae

What’s in a name? Well, when you’re a Black/Death Metal band from the highly religious country of Lebanon, whose original name of Chaotaeon could inadvertently be pronounced as “Shayatin” (which translates to “Devils”), then quite a lot, actually.Continue reading

Gnaw Their Tongues – Collected Atrocities

These days, blending Black Metal with Noise/Ambient electronics is so common it’s become a cliché (or, at least, it seems that way if you’re the one Ghost Cult asks to review EVERY SINGLE ALBUM IN THAT STYLE THAT EVER GETS RELEASED), but that wasn’t always the case. During the late 90’s and early 2000’s using Noise for intros or segues was standard, but actually letting it into your SONGS was still largely frowned upon. Along with his peers in Axis Of Perdition, Mories (the man solely responsible for Gnaw Their Tongues) was among the first to really explore the potential of these two often contradictory styles, and still among the very best.Continue reading

Hamferð – Támsins likam

Hamferð’s slavish devotion to pristine technique and execution on Támsins likam (Metal Blade) becomes abundantly clear merely minutes into it. It’s got the type of laser-focus that may not be feasible for other metal musicians. It’s so well-formed and thought through that it could slightly border on predictable for some listeners. And it’s all well and good to feel that way, but this reviewer enjoys a good Doom Metal album that’s been properly mapped out and won’t run way passed its welcome.Continue reading

Watain – Trident Wolf Eclipse

When it comes to the enjoyment of music, it goes without saying that the most important of the five traditional human senses is hearing (well, duh). However, as anyone who has witnessed their infamous stage shows up close and personally can attest, smell can be just as important a sensory device with Swedish Black Metallers, Watain.Continue reading

Sinmara – Almyrkvi – Infernal Invocation – Sortilegia: Live At De Gebroeders Nobel

On a cold early December night I traveled to Leiden, to de Gebroeders nobel, a venue that regularly puts on decent black metal shows in the Netherlands. Located close to the central station, it’s a pretty easy trip, though as always, if you’re dependent on trains, remember to go home on time.Continue reading
